Jim Hill Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 I had posted earlier about fishing in a pit and catching small mouth bass there but as of recently I couldn't get one. Threw everything I had and nothin. Well, it was suggested I used squarebills which I haven't gone to buy yet (thanks btw for recommending them). However I had some leeches I was using yesterday and sure enough the bass were at this pipe and actually landed one!!I can see the fish swimming around the pipe but I had my polarized lenses on. When I got there I saw 1 LM and 2 SM. I had one on in first 5 mins but it got off then I landed this one. My new uncalibrated I think scale said just under 4lbs but this thing LOOKED huge!My new found passion, smallmouth bass! 5 Quote

Jim Hill Posted May 31, 2015 Author Posted May 31, 2015 I would love to land my first smallie, but I don't know where to catch them. Nice bass, congrats. take a look at lake link, your local state DNR website, and of course here on the forums to find them in your area! Lucky for me this is about one mile from my house. 1 Quote

Super User MIbassyaker Posted June 2, 2015 Super User Posted June 2, 2015 I would love to land my first smallie, but I don't know where to catch them. Nice bass, congrats. After reading this, and glancing at your profile, I remembered having seen this article on BR a while back: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/smallmouth_record.html Sounds like you may be in the right place for good-sized fish if you can get to them. 1 Quote
Hogsticker Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 That fish right there is going to cost you a lot of money. Not to shabby for your 1st smallie. Quote
massrob Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Wow that's a good one. Awesome man I can't wait to catch my first smallie. I actually just found out last weekend that my aunts private pond has tons of smallies in it. I cant believe it took me this long to find that out. I used to swim there when I was a kid. I wish I knew about fishing back then. I'm either gonna catch one on vacation in two weeks or when I go down to my aunts. All I know is I'm dying to catch a smallmouth. Great fish man I hope my first one is that big. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted June 2, 2015 Super User Posted June 2, 2015 That is a beast of a smallmouth. Congrats! Quote
Jim Hill Posted June 2, 2015 Author Posted June 2, 2015 Its not my first smallie, i've caught them many times before when I was younger. However, its my first (two) this year and by far the biggest i've ever caught. And the place it is at is virtually unfished! I do agree its gonna cost me a lot of money, i've all ready bought things for them I never would have owned! Its just so exciting to not only sight fish but just knowing this pit is over 100 feet deep, cold, and relatively remote/unfished but its 1 mile from my house in the middle of the woods!Up here on the Iron Range we have a lot of old mining pits from the 1890's and early 1900's which are all filled with water and some with fish. The bass that come out of them are usually really pretty colors, dark, and healthy. I wouldn't say theres a world record in there but I would almost bet there are some close to state records. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 8, 2015 Super User Posted June 8, 2015 Nice fish. I caught my first smallie of the year about an hour ago. I caught it in a local river on a senko. It was about 2-3lbs. I catch so few of these fish that it is a real treat to hook one, especially in a fast moving river. It's easy to forget how powerful these fish even when they are small. Quote
