Today marks a great moment in history! I finally convinced my girlfriend of two years and avid angler to let me teach her on casting reels.

The very first thing she did his hold the rod out in front of her and click the bail.....without her thumb on the spool. She also picked out her very first backlash.

Overall was a fun day before work and the gratification I felt from getting through her head the joys and benefits of having versatile equipment was great.

Anyone else had to battle with their significant other over learning casting equipment?

The picture below is less related and just a picture of her with a nice rainbow.

Showing off a decent trout caught on the Clark Fork

My wife picked up on it quicker than spinning gear.......prob because they're kinda like spin cast reels

I was terrified to let my wife hold a baitcaster. She made a couple decent casts gave it back and said no thanks. She never was into fishing.

good for you!  My wife and I decided we have to fish on the opposite side of the lake in order to save our marriage.

Of course, when I go check on her and she starts to backlash for the first time, I get blamed, go figure.

I can relate to this, as my girlfriend always wants me to be close by, but also blames me for the bite being slow, or pitching on top of her fish. So I can never win.

My wife looked at a bait cast reel and looked at me and said "I have seen the problems you have sometimes, and no thanks I will pass and stick to my spinning reels."  I am still trying to convince her to try one, maybe someday...lol

My wife won't budge on the spinning reel but I've been considering handing over my citica e to my 9 year old daughter.

Last summer I asked my daughter if she wanted to go fishing with me on Sunday. She said sure so I went to BP and bought her a Daiwa spin caster reel for 70 bucks and put it on on a rod I had.
When we hit the water she never picked it up. Said she wanted yo use one of mine. So I handed her a St Croix Triumph with a Fplueger XT.
Long story short she was casting fairly well after 10 minutes.
I returned the Daiwa.

My wife use to come fishing with me. She would read while I fished. She's into flower gardening so her days out on the water with me are over. :laugh5:

Ive been looking at Pfluegers BC reels for a while. Either the patriarch or supreme. Im assuming you like yours of you had it paired on a Croix?

The XT is a very nice reel. It does well on the St Croix and even better on my Fenwick HMG.

That's cool.  I can't get my wife to use an artificial lure.  She's stubborn about only using nightcrawlers.  I'm lucky that she even fishes though.

My wife mastered the lews casters without a problem, she has never got a birds nest. I am amazed at this seeing I had a learning curve when I made the switch years back

I had to ween my gf off of live bait unless we're trout fishing. However now she'll only throw Texas rigged plastics and drop shot. Cannot show her any other techniques.

I got my fiancée to learn baitcasters last year. She actually picked it up pretty well. I just told her how and why of the baitcaster and she only had 2 overruns.

I picked my wife up a Rick Clunn several years ago, and she tried it a handful of times and didn't like it. Last year I bought her a Lews BB1 Pro and still didn't like it. So this year she tried the Daiwa Pixy SP68, and she's really enjoying it, and also bought a Shimano Aldebaran BFS since she liked the Pixy so well, and she's really liking this reel also. She said she wants to try a little heavier reel for heavier baits and she is trying to decide between the Zillion and Metanium, but leaning more towards the Metanium due to it being a little lighter. Be careful what you introduce them to.

Gardening is too much like work.

My girlfriend is a gardener too.  And not a fisherwoman.  We see enough of each other already so that's okay by me.

My girlfriend loves to fish and after her first time out with me she learned how to fish with a baitcaster without getting backlashes! Her favorite is my shimano chronarch 50e. Perfect for her little hands.

If your trying to learn casting reels on your own with no one to guide you can be more challenging as you have to just figure it out. Having someone who is experienced and a good caster right next to you teaching you is a breeze. As long as the person puts forth a but of effort and takes it seriously in 30 minutes to a hour they should have it down pretty good and totally be on their own from then on. I have taught a few people how to use them and some have it down pretty good in like 10-15 minutes. They only issue is when switching to trickier baits to feather out. There is really no substitute for a good thumb and that just come with some time.
