masterbass Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 I was fishing near a dam on the Ohio river which runs parallel to rail road tracks and is pretty secluded because you need to drive a couple miles next to the tracks to get there. As I was leaving 3 guys were walking down the tracks and they looked homeless. As they approached one asked me where the next town was. I felt a little uneasy but one of the guys shook his head to the other and they moved on. I'm an athletic looking guy and I've been told I look intimidating so I can't help wondering if they looked at me and just decided they'd rather find an easier target. I still wonder what would've happened if I just looked some average joe because there was absolutely no one else around. Quote

bassguytom Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Wow. I've been lucky so far I guess. I also swing in from the trees and open carry a bow and arrow while screaming nonsensical sayings. I let everyone know I'm nucking futz! But seriously I'm glad they didn't rob or hurt you. Seen too much to carry a wepon anymore. I'm done with all that. 1 Quote
WPCfishing Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Thanks A-Jay and Alonerankin. I'll be sure to be prepared if it ever happens again. It's actually interesting that it doesn't happen more often. Usually I'm perfectly at ease when angling alone...but yeah that inner instinct was intense...I was very sure I was going to be robbed, and there was nothing I could have done about it. Anyone ever recall anglers being harmed or robbed in the news? I do recall hearing about a guy not far from DC who went night fishing and never came home. Turned out he was killed in his tent that night. Scary stuff. You had quite a whip in your hands. If they started to come at you let them have a good lashing. Go for the face and now Get a CCP. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted June 2, 2015 Super User Posted June 2, 2015 I fear humans much more than any snake or rock that I might slip on. I agree with your priorities regarding fear, despite its lack of support in the recent snake thread ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I own several rifles, shotguns & sidearms for hunting and benchrest shooting but never pack a firearm for personal protection. Sliding a handgun under your belt comes with enormous responsibility that is fraught with grave liabilities. If someone is bent on taking you out, the odds are low that you'll get an opportunity to use your gun. Aileen Wuornos used a little 22 caliber handgun to kill 7 men in 7 separate instances during a 12-month period. I don’t know how many of her Johns were packing, but all were defenseless against Aileen. Even in an otherwise benign situation, exposing a firearm can trigger a deadly reaction in your adversary, who now believes it’s his life in jeopardy. In a panic-driven situation, there’s always an outside chance of shooting an unarmed assailant or innocent bystander. Right or wrong, it will turn your life upside down, empty your pockets and have you spending many days in a courtroom, or worse, many years in prison. In Newark, NJ, I was involved in an armed robbery. While inserting the key in my car door, I was confronted by 4 men and a revolver with a silencer pointed at my face. Obviously, if I dared to go for a gun, I wouldn’t be typing this today. Attitude is underrated, and can be more effective than the gun you never get a chance to use. When adrenalin mixes with testosterone, it straightens the spine, lifts the chin and has you staring directly into the eyes of your alleged adversary. I firmly believe that appearing like the mugger rather than the muggee has spared me from serious harm on more than one occasion (offered solely as food for thought). Roger 3 Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted June 2, 2015 Super User Posted June 2, 2015 My favorite pond is very private, being a cemetery pond that most don't have access to. I got permission to fish it, and am one of the only ones who do so. However, up the path out of the woods and down the street a little, there is a giant pool in the neighbourhood adjoining. It's killer in these hot NC days (only getting hotter) to hear the delighted shouts and splashes from the water. Maybe a little different encounter of human kind . You're going to have to be prepared for the zombie apocalypse! Quote

Robert Riley Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 When I was in high school, I snuck on to a golf course to night fish. Ran into a guy diving for golf balls. Scared the daylights out of me, we both thought we were in trouble haha 1 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted June 5, 2015 Super User Posted June 5, 2015 When I go fishing I don't usually bring all my CCs, Bank Cards or leave my wallet in my car. No reason to have it on the water really, I'll carry my license and ID. Quote

LVLDVL Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I'm curious if anyone has any ghost encounters while fishing or just something you experienced that you can't explain in rational terms and it has made you not want to go back to a fishing spot. I would love to hear some. 1 Quote

I would love to hear some. I fish in Harpers Ferry, so yes! Most of it is probably mist and fog, but the locals swear this area is haunted. Seriously, even the realtors here mention ghosts. Civil War battlefields on both sides of the Shenandoah river. Quote

I actually tend to under-appreciate it around here. I'm so used to passing by the historic markers and battlefields just running errands in town. But in quiet moments I do think about it...ghosts, hauntings, and such. And the river can look almost mystical when there's fog and rain. haha sorry I'm bored because it's been raining for days now and I can't go fishing Quote
joeblowwwww Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I know a guy who was killed fishing on a bank in Florida somewhere... went there to work after a hurricane wiped everything about 20 yrs ago. they found him on a bank with his fishing stuff and a bullet in his back... turned out some crackheads saw him.. shot him and bragged about the $40 they got off him. BE CAREFUL !!!!! 1 Quote
brgbassmaster Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Yup been there. Im from northern Michigan originally and never had any problems with ppl out in the country. But now im stationed in Arizona and this place sucks. The area I fish is the Gila river south of phoenix. It goes from Phoenix way out into the desert. The bass fishing is phenomenal. Tons of fish in the 3/6lb range and quite a few in the 7-10lb range every yr are caught. BUT this place is dangerous. Tons of shootings all the time. People are always out just shooting off roudns and always towards the water fro some reason. So when your out on your boat expect a few rounds to somehow come close to you every time out. A lot of my friends have had to discharge there side arms because of these idiots. But my story starts here. I found an area on google maps that looked promising. I head over there and get out of my truck and its a hiking area. But I figured there were probalbly people shooting out there and as im walking out I hear a gun shot. So I stop and wait. About 3 minutes later a guy walks right next to the bush im crouching by. Hes carrying a huge duffle bag and doesn't even notice me. So I stand up and shuffle my feet and nothing. Then I see a guy about 30 yds away. I step out yell over to him and wave in a friendly manner. We make eye contact then he steps behind a bush. So I stand there he steps out again we make eye contact I say hey and wave again cuz he was carrying a rifle. All the sudden he brings it up aims towards me and I jump behind a bush and he lets off a round. I turn around and high tail it out of there in the opposite direction. I get up the bridge look down and see them next to my truck just chillin at their car. I walk down throw my stuff in the back of the truck jump in and get out of there. Very scary moment seeing a guy aim a rifle at you. 1 Quote

Did he laugh after he let off a round? At least then, I can conclude that he was a moron who just wanted to scare you. I'm frustrated that I can't understand why someone would do this. If you're going to raise your firearm at me, please at least rob me, tell me I was sleeping with your wife, call me a derogatory racial name, or hell just tell me to take off my panties and squeal like a pig, so I know why you were doing this to me. 1 Quote

Super User the reel ess Posted June 5, 2015 Super User Posted June 5, 2015 I've had people in an urban setting walk up and ask for a ride, a beer, money...The answer is I'm not going that way, I don't have any/enough money or beer to be giving it away. I quit fishing a public, secluded place alone for that reason. One guy walked up, chatted then asked for a beer. I lied and said we didn't have any and he pulled one out of his own pocket. Then had the nerve to ask for a ride. When I said we weren't going his way, he said I haven't told you where I'm going yet. My buddy said "You're going away from us right now." We separated so if he did anything, we could take him on. I'm not a violent guy, so it was unnerving. I didn't want to turn my back and fish anymore. Now I'm an armed, non-violent guy. 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted June 5, 2015 Super User Posted June 5, 2015 My best friend was fishing a public place alone on a weekday morning when a guy, much bigger than him, walked up without a rod or anything related to fishing and struck up a conversation. My friend said the conversation was weird and unsettling. He thought he was going to get robbed and just told the guy he had no money on him. The guy kind of laughed it off and walked away. I'm always wary of people who are going nowhere in particular on a day when everyone else is working. Of course, I may be there at that time too and someone could think that about me. But I'm fishing. And it pays to be cynical and suspicious. 1 Quote

Dude idk. I just got out of there i hid behind the bush for about 30 seconds then zig zagged my way in the opposite direction. My buddy was in his yak same river different section. All the sudden a round hits the water within 10 ft of him but he can't see anyone so he yells. Then another shot same area. Now he pulls out his handgun and racks it. Shot goes off again. He aims in the general direction and just starts firing. Sees a guy running away from him. So common out there. I had a guy shooting straight down a trail i was walking down. Luckily it was in the opposite direction. What if it was towards me he woulda nailed me. I walked up and he stopped shooting until i walked by. They all look like border jumpers anyways. I try to talk and they just speak spanish and continue shooting. The cop i know says theres a lot of cartel action at night down there and a lot of other things. And he has been on the force for 21 yrs. Nobody of light skin color goes there at night lol. Quote
