@ 21 I would agree that it would have left a mark.

I could refer a few story's but I won't.. I get the feeling you may be opposed to carrying a firearm, I can respect that. I would rather be armed with a gun, rather than a machete.. A man has to know his limitations & be comfortable in his own skin.

I quit night fishing a few years ago..

Three guys  beat me up and robbed me . I wasnt fishing but camping alone . Back in the 70's when I was a teenager .

Wow, I'm so sorry that happened to you.  But you made it through and are still here to fish, thankfully.

This isn't the right place but - I look at it as more of a deterrent - who is more apt to be approached;

a person - or a person who obviously is ready to protect himself ?

A-Jay

Absolutely. But that also depends on the person approaching and if they feel they have any advantage.

Either way, always be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are.

Hey A-Jay can you PM me about what open carry entails, or maybe point me to a link?  Gun laws in WV are so long-winded and give me a headache so I'm not clear about some of them.

PM sent - There is a lot to know regarding this controversial subject - but the bottom line is -

It Is Not That Complicated - You Can Carry a gun if you choose to and follow the rules.

Some may not like it but that's their problem not MINE.

Actually I'm not at all opposed to carrying a gun...my brother just mentioned the machete since he's more into sword and spear collecting and thinks it would intimidate any would-be bandit :)

(We have an actual Zulu spear from the 1800's mounted on the wall)

With guns though I'm just not clear on the laws out here.

Yeah they're cool stuff :)

My grandfather (on my dad's side of the family) was a fighter pilot, but his father and grandfather were field medics serving in Africa, and parts of Europe.  They collected quite a lot of military and tribal weaponry.

See, what you need is a rod that secretly converts to a Zulu spear.  Like a cane sword.

I carry a machete when I go down to the river. Not specifically for self-defense but for getting thru the brush. There is a little farm pond that I like to fish, but it is a bullpen. I feel safer with an ax when I go there. A machete is kind of light to defend from a bull.

Anyone thinking of carrying a gun owes it to themselves and their family to go get some practical training. I'm not talking about the "this end is where the bullet comes out class" I'm talking avoiding conflict and defending yourself if needed. Carrying a guitar does not make you a musician, carrying a gun does not make you safe.

I've got a few hundred hours of courses under my belt, I am a good shooter, but shooting (and carrying) is such a small part of it all. Check out some SouthNarc videos on YouTube to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

FWIW, I do some night fishing and I live near Memphis. Whether it is day or night, fishing, shopping, hiking, whatever... there is always a chance someone wants everything you've got and then some.

Not to dispute anything anybody has said, but its worth pointing out that your chances of being harmed in some way by a random stranger while fishing are rather less than your chances of having a car accident on the way to or from the lake. I'm just sayin'.

My favorite pond is very private, being a cemetery pond that most don't have access to. I got permission to fish it, and am one of the only ones who do so. However, up the path out of the woods and down the street a little, there is a giant pool in the neighbourhood adjoining. It's killer in these hot NC days (only getting hotter) to hear the delighted shouts and splashes from the water.

Maybe a little different encounter of human kind :).

You're right that we live in an unpredictable and often dangerous world. The chances of being injured going and coming from the lake are higher than the chances of needing a life preserver while fishing, yet I came close to drowning twice before I resolved to wear one every time out. Those numbers meant nothing to my friend Greg who drowned a few years ago while fishing alone without a pfd. I wear my seat belt and keep my vehicles in good shape also. My point is taking proper precautions to protect against these things lowers the risk and is the right thing to do.

Never had anything bad happen fishing. Did have some guys try to break into my car while I was camping. Few shots in the air took care of that. I live in WV and carry if you want to know the laws PM me and I will tell you the best way about going about things. Take care and tight lines.

2 months away from owning my Glock, but as of right now my 18 inch machete will do the trick.  I really hope to God I never have to use it, but if the situation ever does present itself I know I'll be prepared.  The world is a crazy place, and it's crazy to think that dangerous scenarios happen even with a peaceful hobby like fishing.

Thankfully I do not live in an area where a ton of violent crime takes place. That being said, being in a secluded area alone can always be hazardous. I see a ton of guys walk a mile into the woods to fish reservoirs from shore, and they stand with their backs to the trails, with their earbuds in and blasting music. Don't get me wrong, im not paranoid, and being 6'2 and 200 pounds, im completely capable of handling myself, but I would NEVER put myself in a situation where someone could get the jump on me from behind while I stood completely oblivious. just my opinion on the subject.

I have never had a problem with anyone on the water, however I have been approached by people who were not fishing, and looked awfully uncomfortable. Makes me a little weary but I like to be optimistic towards people. sometimes theyre lost, sometimes theyre mentally handicapped and just looking to strike up a conversation, but in my experience they are usually guys who are out on the water to smoke and want to feel you out to see if youre a cool guy. Not into that activity myself, but theyre usually nice enough guys.

agree absolutely. having family members with security backgrounds who actually are involved with such classes, the mere idea of someone who has no firearm experience saying "im going to carry for protection" can be frustrating sometimes. A lot of people do not realize that if you do not know when and how to utilize a firearm for protection, you can actually be escalating the situation unnecessarily and putting yourself in more danger (physically and legally). I strongly suggest that anyone who wants to, or does carry for self protection take some sort of advanced handgun/concealed carry course, if you have not done so already. Heck, do it again, theyre pretty fun anyways.

On a lighter note. I was fishing once and hear a commotion behind me. Look over my shoulder and there is a guy on a bike with someone chasing behind him. The guy tackled the bike rider right next to me and I see the badge swinging around his neck. The guy on the bike pleading he just needs a job. The uniformed officers quickly rolled up and took him away. Too funny.

The "likes" are not as important as the Sentiment.

Iv`e never felt imminent danger around other people ,but when approached  by strangers a few times I got my knife out to "clean my finger nails" Don`t be shy about letting others know you can defend yourself.

When people walk up behind me without notification,I hate that. I will always greet people ,shuffle my feet  or cough to make them aware of me.

Is 39 young ===uummm ==yep

Some road warriors are lucky I don`t ccw
