I just run a pencil threw the hole in the middle, put a foot on each side and wind it on.

That's what I always did. Guess I never really noticed.

Is that illustration from Shimano or Diawa? (Spinning reel ) Or from power pro?

It's from Shimano, but it doesn't matter. If you want to put line on with out twisting it, that's how it's done. As far as the birches go, I never noticed, I leave the spool in the box, and spool from there. It's in the instructions.

I bought 8 spools of different test Power Pro to redo my reels. Having encountered that stupid notched design, making it near impossible to spool my saltwater spinners, I returned the other seven and will NEVER buy power pro again! Great line but the stupidity of the company lost all my respect for the product. It's like riding on tires with one square side. Duhhhhh... and I will be warning everyone I know.
