Super User Further North Posted May 30, 2015 Super User Posted May 30, 2015 I am curious what you folks see in line life, both when it is spooled and when it is stored unopened. I mix in a bit of everything, braid, mono and fluorocarbon a couple of hybrid type lines. Quote
ThatZX14Fella Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 I buy cheap line so I change it out quite often, just to be safe. Quote
Super User Further North Posted May 30, 2015 Author Super User Posted May 30, 2015 I'm sorta the opposite of that - I have some braid that's been on reels for going on 4 seasons now,,,still doing fine. I swap out my leaders often instead, I think it's cheaper in the long run. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted May 30, 2015 Global Moderator Posted May 30, 2015 Braid can last years spooled and indefinitely unopend and stored. Mono will start to deteriorate if left in the hot sun for months at a time spooled or not. Floro and co poly lines somewhere in between. Mike Quote
Jon G Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Until it becomes unmanagable. I have 16lb FC Sniper on my Jig rod that is going on 13 months strong. I do use KVD Line and Lure which helps extend the life of my line though. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 30, 2015 Super User Posted May 30, 2015 Things that deteriorate line are; UV light / sunlight, cold temperatures below freezing, wear/ abrasion, stretch, twists. If you keep stored spools of line in a dark cool place it lasts a long. If you fish with the line than it is subject to all the above things that deteriorate line. All the single/monofilament lines; nylon, copolymers, fluoropolymers are about equal, braid is less affected by things that deteriorate line, except wear. Tom Quote
Super User Further North Posted May 31, 2015 Author Super User Posted May 31, 2015 That's about what I thought, but I wasn't sure about line I buy that I store before use, Sounds like it's pretty much good for along time. Thanks! Quote
nicksmurf111 Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 As long as it's inside the house, out of the sun. I have some mono and flouro that's over 10 years old, on small spools that I never finished, that are/were still fine. I don't like small spools. If I'm fishing regularly, I've been known to change mono regularly, maybe every 6 trips/days. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 1, 2015 Super User Posted June 1, 2015 I have had some FC on a reel for over a year but most last 3-4 months. Non-FC I will change it in about 1-2 months. Unspooled and in the package, as long as it is out of the sun and stored at room temp> I have had some for about 7 years that still's good. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 I have a jumbo spool of BPS Excel 20lb mono I am still using and it is 15 years old. I keep it in the box hanging on my fishing peg board on our lower level. Quote
