Super User geo g Posted August 10, 2018 Super User Posted August 10, 2018 Bass are not shy to attack a real frog. If they are around bass will be in the area. With a good population of frogs, bass might just be full from feasting on them. I have seen bass busting tad poles during the hatch. Just slow down and make the presentation unresistable. Frog is on the menu! Quote

The lake in question definitely has bass and I definitely have been catching them on hollow-bodies, but never when there was a real frog in the area. I guess my question is, if there are some live frogs that have set up shop in a particular spot on a lake, is it safe to assume this particular location would have a lousy frog bite? I don’t know. I have rarely seen frogs in the wild. Even when you can hear them everywhere. This includes fishing in some 15 or more states when I was a kid. The only thing I do know is when people say “find the bait find the fish” it’s not always true. Sometimes bait will set up shop where whatever eats them doesn’t go. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted August 10, 2018 Super User Posted August 10, 2018 I'm just glad the bull frogs around here don't get much bigger than they do. They are very aggressive. There are days when I can't keep them away from my frogs, and unhooking a big one is not for the meek or timid. Their back legs are very very strong. I will admit though, watching one "stalk" a frog through a mat is comical. You see a wake coming, thinking it might be a bass, then all of a sudden a few feet behind the frog you'll see a set of beady eyes pop up through the grass like little periscopes.....time to put those high speed reels to work and get kermit the heck out of town. Now that I think about it....when an area of the lake has a lot of bull frogs in it, I rarely catch a bass....I don't know why. I think the bass are still there, but the bullfrogs are such an pain in the butt to fish around, I think I usually pull up shop and go else where, because as I said before, dealing with hooked, big bull frogs is undesirable to the max. Black Hawk Basser Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Personally, I've never experienced a correlation between frog lures not working if frogs are present in an area. I hear then everywhere I fish in the evening. If there's good cover and weather for frog fishing, I'm throwing one. Quote
Smalls Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 I hear the frogs almost all day. Bass still seem to eat my fake one. Til this week, that is. Along with the frogs, are those stupid painted turtles. You know what they like to chomp on? My d**n frogs. The bass ain’t fond of em, either. They all moved to the other side of the pond. Quote
Lead Head Posted August 13, 2018 Posted August 13, 2018 Wow... sounds like some of you guys should harvest some frogs. Maybe thin out the frog population at bit and have frog legs for dinner. I rarely eat fish but I will absolutely throw down on frog legs when given the opportunity. And yes, they really do kinda taste like chicken. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted August 13, 2018 Super User Posted August 13, 2018 The only place I ever fished that was overrun with frogs didn't seem to have any bass in it. I didn't even see minnows and it was summer, so I split. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted August 14, 2018 Super User Posted August 14, 2018 There are certain locations I fish that are loaded with toads and frogs. At nighttime you can barely hear any other noise besides the sounds these toads and frogs make, especially during the summer. Have caught many big bass at night with hollow belly frogs and topwater lures in these locations. I am confident these bass come out at night to hunt these animals. Quote
datkins Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 I don't know for sure if there's a correlation, but I can say anecdotally that I've caught more frogs that bass on frog lures, and that anywhere I've caught those frogs I usually got skunked by the fish. Quote
