Only fished my Stradic about 6 trips and it is making noise when taking up slack line.  Goes away with a little tension on the line, even very minimal like a wacky rig senko, just barely moving.  Anyone else have this or any thoughts?

That's funny cause I just bought a stradic ci4+ as well and used it maybe three times and since the very beginning it felt very geary -- like there's no grease at all inside the reel. Also, there is a little bit of lateral play on the handle.

And yes, it's noisy too. it sounds like its from the gears, because it kind of feels like its rubbing on something. Hopefully DVT is around for some answers.

Totally different reels and not compatible with the same rods. One is casting gear and one is spinning gear.

Don't use grease on your gears, try lubing the gears thru the oiling port, a light oil is all that is needed on the gears

I'm going to have to disagree here. On a part that takes a lot of torque like your main drive gear, you need a heavier grease. A light oil will wear them down faster and makes the reel feel less smooth compared to a grease such as Reel Butter.

Ok, so I lubed my reel and the geariness and noise hasn't changed. Considering the lateral play/movement in the handle, I'm guessing it needs an extra washer on the drive gear, and that would then fix the annoying feeling. Do you have the same play in the handle? Perhaps we have the same issue.

When you purchase any reel it is a good idea to make sure it has the proper amount of fresh grease in it.

I just purchased four Sarah's and they are performing fine.

But I plan to take them to Wayne Knabe in Powhatan for him to open them up and replace the factory grease with his special grease he created for reels.

Yes, I do have the same play in the handle.  I have not tried lubing my reel up yet, but I was going to.  I think that the lateral play in the handle may have something to do with it.

The reel might be a lemon, take it back for exchange if you can.  The reel (any reel for that matter) should be perfectly silent with no play in the handle, nor should it require a washer.  Any reel can get those problems over time, 6 trips is way too soon.

I have many spinning reels, out of the box none get any additional attention.  With usage the only service they get is oil in the handle bearings, oil on the spindle, bail movement and line roller bearing.

Being a Shimano use their oil, I had a warranty negated because I used something else.  Mine are off warranty, I'm using Boca Bearing's lightening oil on all my reels.

Tappinbass, I believe your issue may in fact be related to the handle play as I suspected earlier. I opened up my reel and there was plenty of factory grease on the gears, and did not need to have sprayed any in the oil port like I did. My reel only had a single washer on the main gear instead of the two listed on the schematic. Since the fj, ci4+, and bairunner d all share the same gear washers, I decided to take one out of my other reel and add it into my straci ci4+. Afterwards, I put it all together and the feeling was too tight, so I disassembled again and replaced the stainless one with the thinner copper washer and now everything feels perfect. It's a shame I had to disassemble a brand new shimano to fix this issue, but no one's perfect. Hopefully this helps you and anyone else with the same problem.

Is the line slapping against the rod?

It is definitely not the line slapping on the rod.  I think I am going to try to send it back.  I should not have to do anything like add washers to a new reel, especially one that I paid that much for.

Thank you for all the information.  Sounds like we do have the same issue.  I paid extra attention to it this morning.  Aside from the handle issue, it does feel very "geary".
