KyleW2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 So right now I am primarily using 2 setups for fishing. One Johnny Morris Carbonlite (5.4 gear ratio) and one with Shimano Curado I HG, (7.3 geaer ratio) both with the same rod (7 ft MH, johnny morris with micro guide) I mainly use one for soft plastics (mostly worms and brushhogs) with the other being saved for topwater along with the occasional spinner bait. I was curious as to which reel I should use for which? Thanks for any advice Quote
kikstand454 Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Mmm....of the two I would use the carbonlite for your topwater/spinnerbaits. 1 Quote
KyleW2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Author Posted May 28, 2015 Mmm....of the two I would use the carbonlite for your topwater/spinnerbaits. I had been using the Shimanofor topwater, just because it has a faster return.... not sure if I am correct in this thinking though Quote
KyleW2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Author Posted May 28, 2015 Sorry, the carbonlite is actually 6.4:1 Quote
sully420 Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Fast retrieval is good for keeping fish from wrapping you up in cover. Slower retrieval is good for keeping you from fishing crank baits and the like too fast. Hope that helps Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 28, 2015 Super User Posted May 28, 2015 You want to use a faster reel for techniques that require you to reel slack in quickly. Techniques in which you primarily move your bait with the rod and reel in the slack, jerkbaits, jigs, and soft plastics will be what you want you faster reel for while the other reel you will use for everything else. kikstand454 Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Oh. ....OK. ....well the carbonlite being 6.4 changes things a little. Well not really, but iI feel better about the advice. Lol. 6.4 is plenty fast enough for your moving baits, and you should use the fast ratio for your plastics. Honestly though. .... the question you're asking has less to do with ratio- and more to do with inches per turn (ipt) . Ipt is relevent to the speed in which you want to efficiently perform a technique. Ratio is relevent to the amount of work YOU want to do to accomplish that speed. 1 Quote
KayakBasser Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 The curado i has xship so it would hold together better for your spinner bait/cranking. FYI the curado i doesnt come in a 7.3:1 the highest is 7.2:1.Sorry couldnt help myself. Quote

I went with what you suggested and like this setup pretty well. I'm pretty new to using topwater, man I love it though when they are hitting it. Wish I could fish it all day 1 Quote
KyleW2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Author Posted May 30, 2015 I've always heard early morning and late afternoon. Never really tried in the middle of the day and when I have I haven't had a lot of luck. Any in particular good for middle of the day? I want to get one of those jackal pompadours, looks like they'd be a blast to fish with Quote
kikstand454 Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 I feel anytime I would throw a spinnerbait, I can still catch fish on topwater. Overcast or slightly breezy. ..etc. I like spooks, chug bugs and pop R's. I'm simple. 1 Quote
