RHuff Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 I ask this as a serious question (with a half smirky smile). Saw a guy fishing a bright red crankbait on TV and he said the reason he choses red in moderately clear water is because it annoys bass and they strike out of madness. Isn't this a typical reaction strike? A dark red would be more of a crawfish color? I had to rewind it and rewatch it to make sure I heard him right. Have you ever read or heard that Red makes Bass angry? Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted May 27, 2015 Super User Posted May 27, 2015 Who was the guy on TV!?!?!? I want to watch his stuff. I've never met or heard from anyone else who knows what a bass is feeling. That guy must be the real thing. 3 Quote

Super User gardnerjigman Posted May 27, 2015 Super User Posted May 27, 2015 I have no clue how they can distinguish between being mad, and any typical reaction strike using that technique. I remember when the "bleeding" skirts were really big (maybe they still are, not sure). I think that was the only reason for the red though. And as you said, I can see a red or dark red for imitating a crawfish. Quote
C0lt Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 I don't believe that the color red legitimately makes bass angry, however the color red, which is the color of blood and gills, can cause a reaction strike in most predatory fish. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 28, 2015 Global Moderator Posted May 28, 2015 Red works well for me in stained to muddy water, but I don't think a bass even has the ability to feel anger. I'm guessing it's mainly because they eat so many craws. Quote
primetime Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Pink makes them angry, Red....Just annoyed....Swirls in Pink, Hold on tight to your rod..... Quote
primetime Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 In all seriousness, if I knew what Bass were thinking and I could understand them day in and day out, I would kill for that power just for a few years because that is all it would take to clean up.... I do use red split rings or trebles at times, once used Red hooks on worms, not sure if it helped, helps, or if in my head at times, but I like buying Red Trebles for some reason. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted May 28, 2015 Super User Posted May 28, 2015 Randy Howell says he uses a red front hook so fish attack the head of the bait for a better hook up ratio. I don't know if that holds true or not either Quote
desmobob Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 In "The Bass Professor" Doug Hannon's book on big largemouths, I think he mentions something about the bass in his giant home tank reacting strongly and consistently to the color red. Who knows what "emotion" they react with.... Tight lines, Bob Quote
