Tracker Tx 17

Guy my wife works with is thinking of selling his bass boat. It is either a 92 or 93 Bass Tracker TX 17 with a 40HP outboard. I fish out of a Pelican Bass Raider right now but have been keeping my eyes open on a boat if the price is right. The NADA price for this setup is $2,020. He said he would sell for Blue Book value to get a down payment to buy a pontoon for his family.

Thoughts on this boat if anyone has any experience with it?

Dad has a 94 with a 40. Engine isn't the best and most of the dials don't work. However it still floats and gets use out on the bigger waters. Rod box is very short and won't fit rods longer than 6'10"ish.

Dad has a bass raider too and it's a huge upgrade.

Thanks for the reply. I think a 40 HP would be plenty because a) I have never owned a boat with an outboard before and I am used to fishing two people out of an 8ft pelican so anything should be a huge upgrade. 

 

My thoughts are this is a great entry boat to learn how to use and maintain it. If I can get a good 5 years out of it then maybe trade it in on something a little newer and up to date once I learn how to keep up with it.

That wouldn't be too bad of a starter boat. One thing you want to be careful of is what 40 hp it has on it. I believe early 90's was before Force was bought out by Mercury, and those were the years OMC was building motors for tracker as wll. Mercury or OMC are fine, but if it's got the Force, that drops the value considerably.

I own a 92 tracker and for two ppl it works very well. I have the 60 horse johnson outboard and after recently having the carbs cleaned it runs like a champ. One piece of advice is, that if your Engine has the oil injection, get rid of the oil injection and premix your fuel. My local outboard guru says that the oil injection units made in the early 90's were famous for failing. Better to run the engine a little rich than to take a chance on toasting the motor.

   My son and i recently did a total upgrade on mine, new carpets, wiring, instruments and trolling motor. A little time consuming but not that expensive and the boat looks brand new.  The tracker will be a great starter boat and beyond. Just make sure to have a good outboard guy check the motor out before you buy it. Any more questions, feel free to message me.

Thanks for the replies. Based on the pictures I have seen it looks to be in top shape and he is a fishing guide and takes really good care of it. Hopefully it works out for my first bass boat.

 What kind of livewell does this boat have? Did they come with tilt/trim on the outboard?

Trim and tilt would have probably still been an option on a 40 back then so I can't say and it should have an aerated livewell. Best advice is to let him know you're interested and go look it over.

Aerated and does have trim

 I did. He told me he wants to take me to a local lake and to meet up and fish maybe a couple of hours to show it off and to drive it a little and see if I like it. To the earlier poster, it has a 40HP Mercury outboard.

The 40 mercury will get to about 30 or 35 mph. Good for beginners and small lakes. We do get on plane

Does this boat have 4 pin or 6 pin connector for electric hookup on trailer to activate break lights/turn signal?

The trailer is more than likely a 4 pin.

Great my 2011 Toyota Tacoma SR5 is prewired for that. Hopefully this boat has it.

If it has brakes, which I doubt, it will be 5 pin

Cannot wait to get this boat. I saw one exactly like it on the water yesterday while I was plunking around in my Bass Raider 8 and it looked a thing of beauty.
