fisherrw Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 do you think this is a good feel for small finesse baits such as dropshot, senko and shakey head? What kind of rod should I pair it on. I was thinking a phenix maxim 7'3 ml Casting Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted May 25, 2015 Super User Posted May 25, 2015 Which T3? Ballistic, no. 1016, amazing spool but it's still a little too "deep" for what I would want for light line fishing. No idea what it's bottom range is but I can throw a 3/16oz swim jig without a trailer no problem on a 3 power dobyns. It's spool might be a little too controlled for actual BFS lure range if that makes sense. The T3 MX will have similar performance. Air, i believe this or the T3 SV would be your best bet in the T3 family as far as BFS goes. I'm talking sub 1/4oz. I have no experience with either of these reels and know very little about their lure range but they are considered BFS reels I believe. Hogsticker will have a lot more knowledge than I will on this. You're next option would be to just throw an SV spool in a model and get some hedge hog air bearings. Quote
Hogsticker Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 What weights are you considering finesse? Everyone's opinion seems to vary. I like the 1016 spool for 3/16 and up. You could always sell the 1016 spool and use the money Towards a shallow SV spool. Better yet purchase an Alphas sv. It handles the lighter baits better than a stock 1016. It's a fine reel for the money. Quote
fisherrw Posted May 26, 2015 Author Posted May 26, 2015 How much is a good quality shallow spool? My reel model is a daiwa t3 1016HL tw. Also I can't seem to get great casting distance out of it is there a way to improve that?? Quote

Also I can't seem to get great casting distance out of it is there a way to improve that??Flush the bearings, loosen spool tension, lower break settings, put the 3d on long cast. I have 3 1016s that all are used for moving baits. All cast very well with little effort. A shallow sv spool will run you around 100$ I believe the rcs 1000 sv is around 95 give or take. Quote
Hogsticker Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 The 1016 is a casting machine with weights above 3/8 Oz. I could put it on long cast mode with the dial on 1 or 2 and smoke it with a half ounce lipless crank. Surprisingly, the Alphas SV put it to shame. Quote
fisherrw Posted May 26, 2015 Author Posted May 26, 2015 What pound test and type of line were you using? Quote

DirtyDeuceGoose Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 I just got a RCS SV 1000 Deep from JLS for $83.57. Pretty sure the RCS shallow is the same price. Quote
masterbass Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Japan lure shop has sv1000 deep spools in stock for 69 plus shipping. The sv1000 is one of the best kept secrets because it also fits steez and tdz and is cheaper than the sv 105 spool. Quote
sarcazmo Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Man I'm going to have to purchase one of these Alphas SV I keep hearing so much about. Might be the 'reel' king under $200. 1 Quote

Also I can't seem to get great casting distance out of it is there a way to improve that?? What do you consider What do you consider great casting distance? Personally I think most reels cast about the same distance with identical set-ups. Talking every day weights. Naturally something like a standard Zillion (older model anyway) isn't going to cast a 1/8 oz. lure as far as a Pixy. The rod is going to be more important than the reel...provided the reel is capable of throwing the desired weights. How "light" is light for you? Senkos I have aren't light and can be zinged on any reel. I've never tried 1/4 oz. or less with my T3s as I have several other reels already set-up for those weights. I've got two of the T3 1016 and one of the T3 MX 1016XHL reels. Casting distance is as good as on any of my other reels with 3/8-1/2 oz. spinnerbaits. You don't need to be on Longcast to achieve that distance either. The T3 braking system is the best of any of my reels. It is the only reel I can cast with zero brakes. Possibly your spool tension is too high. Also what weight line are you using? Quote
fisherrw Posted May 28, 2015 Author Posted May 28, 2015 I was thinking of switching to 8 pound sniper?? Quote
