Super User HoosierHawgs Posted May 25, 2015 Super User Posted May 25, 2015 The post "Crankbaits Tiring" and "Sqaurebills and Losing Fish" got me thinking. I fish Squarebills on a typical cranking outfit a medium rod and a low gear reel, but others seem to fish them differently... What is your favorite squarebill setup? Rod Reel Line Bait Replacement Hooks? Quote

rangerjockey Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 I throw them on several set-ups but my favorite for squarebills is a older Team Daiwa green handle glass rod, A tatula 6:1 and 10 or 12 lb. flouro. As far as baits I like balsa and I'm partial to Dave's and Bass craft... I like good ol Gammy round bends , owners or Diaichi death traps. Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 25, 2015 Super User Posted May 25, 2015 I have used several different set ups but the one I have now seems to be the best. Rod - Fenwick HMG 7'2" M-MF rated 3/8oz to 1oz casting. Reel - Pflueger Supreme XT 6.4:1 casting. Line - Spiderwire Ultimate Mono 14lb. Bait - Rapala DT Fat 3, DT Flat 3, Storm Arashi 3 and 5, Xcalibur XCS 100 and 200, Bagley Rattlin' Kill'R B2, KVD 1.5. Replacement hooks - Mustad KVD Elite Triple Grip, Owner Stinger ST-41 1 Quote

I do change the hooks on these. My other favorite squarebill is the KVD 1.5 in firetiger, chili craw, bluegill, green gizzard shad, or blue gizzard shad. Those are my two main brands, but don't overlook Norman Mad N's, Or the Excalibur series either. In murky water you cannot beat the norman fat boy. Quote

JeziHogg Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 I've boycotted deep diving crankbaits and just stick to squarebills. I use a St Croix Legend Tournament Bass "Big Cranker" with a Metanium 6.2:1 spooled with 40lb PP SS with a 15lb Tatsu leader. I like the Arashi squarebills/wakebaits and keep the stock hooks. I'll also throw KVD 1.5 and 2.5's and switch the hooks out to a shorter shank treble. Quote

If you like lefty reels, try one for squares. Great application. I have the first version Kinetic casting reel, the silver model in the 7.0:1 gear ratio. I call that a sleeper work horse reel, it was $119.00 when I got it and I clean and lube it every season and it is a solid performer, I feel I got more than my money's worth from that reel. Quote

no39 Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 I'm constantly trying to refine most of my setups to meet my preferences and I'd like to see other's reasonings behind their choices. Well, here's mine: Veritas Winch 7' Curado 201 I 10# Seaguar Abrazx Jackall MC60SR Gamakatsu EWG SS ME Lure Wrap I like the veritas because it offers a light and sensitive rod that can often be found for less than 70 bucks. I feel because the rod is so limp I can use a stiffer line like abrazx to gain more sensitivity without pulling hooks from fish. The mc60 is just my personal preference, I think it has the right wobble and it constantly will dart off course making it more erratic than other cranks I've fished. The crankbait pictured is pretty beat and is being held together with superglue. I switch out the hooks to the short shanks to keep the hooks closer to the body of the bait to help with reduce snags. I use a smaller one on the belly to help reduce snaginess. And just get a wrap, trust me. 1 Quote
