I have recently got more interested in crank baits. I don't have a lot of experience with them. The other day I was fishing a 2.5 that was dragging on the bottom. Is there any disadvantage to this vs being off the bottom? Thanks!!

Digging bottom is where I want my crankbait.  I always want it hitting something, even if it's only the bottom of the lake.

You will get bit a LOT more if your crainkbait is grinding the bottom or deflecting off of cover. If you are fishing rip rap, just try and and tick your bait off of the bottom rather than grinding it, or you will be spending a lot of money on crankbaits.
