Im looking for a jig reel to pair with a new rod i just bought.

Do you guys like a high speed reel? I was looking at the tatula 100-r in 8:1:1

i feel like that high speed reel would really help pick up the slack on a hook set

I like a reel with high IPT with jigs for the reason you mentioned. They also make it easier to keep pressure on the fish.

I guess I'm old-fashioned, but I don't like high-speed reels. I don't have slack out anyway, and prefer to fish jigs and plastics with the reel rather than the rod. A high-speed reel would probably do me more harm than good for the way I like to fish.

For short-line situations, a high-speed reel might be useful; not to pick up slack but to get the bait back to you ASAP and make another cast if you're expecting to get bit either on the initial drop or soon thereafter.

My favorite jig reel is the Daiwa Zillion, but I've heard good things about the Tatulas but not much on the 8.1:1 gear ratio.

The tatula 8.1 should work great.  Some don't like the frame for palming, but if you do then go for it.

The Tatula 8.1 would be great for it.

The first thing I look for in a reel for jig & soft plastics is how much it weighs.  Secondly, it needs to carry enough line, but a lot of line isn't necessary.   I used to use round reels, regular Calcutta's and Calcutta 200 TEGT.   Over the past 6 or 7 years, those reels started feeling heavier and heavier and so I went to 50 size low profile reels.  I've got a few of the Curado and Chronarch models, in the 50 size.  They come in a 6.4 gear ratio and I haven't found the need for anything faster.

Should I happen to mess up the line, I carry a couple of older green curado reels to finish out the day with.

I agree with most of the other guys here, I like a faster ratio for jigs. The new high speed Curado I is a very good reel for this.

I'm using a Tournament Pro on a Custom Speed Stick. Its a good pair.. Today was my first day using braid. One word: awesome!

Consider using braid when you buy the new reel.

That is the reel I use for jig fishing and it works flawlessly...
