doyle8218 Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 I am stll amazed how very small bass bite and get hooked on bigger baits. Yesterday I was using 5.8 Keitech Fats and 10 in worms. Caught several very small ones. Amazing how they go after such big baits. 1 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted May 23, 2015 Super User Posted May 23, 2015 I have a package of the 5.8 inch fat Keitechs. I have only fished the 3.8 and 4.8 sized baits. Interesting but not surprising that they took a few smaller fish. I only bought them to fish for wipers in a lake I occasionally make it to. Side note on the reverse end of the spectrum I caught a 20.5 inch bass a few weeks ago on a dropshotted cross tail shad. This is typically a numbers bait due to its size and also at times a panfish magnet. Just goes to show ya that small and large baits alike account for small and large fish. Quote
Brett Strohl Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 I don't really even like messing with small baits after seeing little bass go after lures 3/4ths the size of their body. I don't know if that's a good strategy or not, but I honestly don't have any luck on small lures anyway. Quote
*Hank Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 I've cuaght 4in bass on 6in senkos it's funny how they'll go after baits bigger than themselves Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted May 24, 2015 Super User Posted May 24, 2015 It's always funny but it's common with all types of bass, smallmouth even more so. I catch a lot of 8" bass on 6" and bigger plastics and big crankbaits like a 6xd. My friend catches a fair share of 1.5 pounders on 8" swimbaits even. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 24, 2015 Global Moderator Posted May 24, 2015 Bass don't have mirrors, they have no way of knowing and no perception of how big they are. Only way they find out what they can or can't eat is by trial and error, just ask this guy that slammed into my Dep's 175 SS at Beaver Lake. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 About the only big bait that hasn't produced many small fish for me is a 1/2oz. jig with a big craw trailer. Compared to some baits, some would consider it small, but a big bulky trailer on a jig is a big meal for Ms. Bass. I'd bet I could count the number of fish under 15in. I caught on a jig/craw combo last year on my hands. Just something about a jig that seems to produce nicer fish. I catch more small fish on 10in.worms. Before someone comments about a 15in. bass being small, consider the region I'm in and the fact that the bait is a mere 5in. long. Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 25, 2015 Super User Posted May 25, 2015 Caught that one on a Rapala Minnow. Quote
