Super User CWB Posted May 23, 2015 Super User Posted May 23, 2015 Never really liked the original Chatterbaits. I have used Strike King's Pure Poison for a few years and really like it. Until I bought and tried a few Z-Man Project Z Chatterbaits. These things are fantastic. From the new line tie to the skirts and colors, I think this is far and away the best bait in this category. Love the Breaking Bream color. But they also have the best colors available IMO. Paired with a Lunker City Swimming Ribster, these rock. What are all of your favorites? I'll be picking up more of these at T.W. with the 15% off sale. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 23, 2015 Global Moderator Posted May 23, 2015 The new Project Z baits are very nice, a much needed improvement from the original chatterbaits.  I make my own and it's pretty rare I don't have one tied on. Since I started painting blades it really opened up a ton of options. 3 Quote

Super User Senko lover Posted May 23, 2015 Super User Posted May 23, 2015 I just picked up my first chatterbait. I got the original ZMan one because Cabelas didn't carry anything else. Quote

Super User CWB Posted May 23, 2015 Author Super User Posted May 23, 2015 Those are pretty slick BB. Nice to not be st the mercy of someone elses sizez and colors. Kent, do you have alot of experience using the Rage Blade? T.W. Has mixed reviews, although mostly good. Seems there is (was) trouble with the snap and it tend tom come to the surface. Can't tell if it has a good trailer keeper. Good color selction also. For me, all I need are Bluegill, Black/ Blue, and Sexy Shad or Z-Man Blueback Herring. Anyone else like the Rage Blade? Price is right. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted May 23, 2015 Super User Posted May 23, 2015 Bluebasser makes the best I have used. The quality is outstanding. Really like the durability of the finish, eyes on the bait, non football head design, wire tied, larger hook, and endless skirt options. As long as he is making them I will be buying them. Already have received 2 orders from him and everything was and went perfect! 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 23, 2015 Super User Posted May 23, 2015 I don't want to hijack the thread but I have a quick question. I use the same heand blade as BlueBasser86, does bending the blade back make a difference? Mine hunt really well and vibrate hard but I see a lot of guys bending the blade back. Quote
beagle 25 Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 I love the rock and roll type that bb makes the hook is completely weed less so it comes through brush piles like a champ it has all but replaced square bills for me Quote

Yes it effects the amount of vibration, how much they hunt, and how deep they want to run. Those baits give more thump while baits like the Zmans have A faster, more steady vibration. The Rage blades are nice too, kind of their own category too since the design is so different. They have to be fished very slowly, which I think is why so many had problems with them at first. I've been playing with the undressed one for awhile and like what it's done so far. 1 Quote

I use the same heand blade as BlueBasser86, does bending the blade back make a difference? Mine hunt really well and vibrate hard but I see a lot of guys bending the blade back. I have played around with all three styles of bladed jigs : Original Chatterbait style, unbent Shakee head style and the bent Shakee head style. These were my observations concerning the three. Original Chatterbait style               Vibration:                          High pitched buzz, least thump               Running depth:                 Deepest               Hunting Ability:                Exhibits the least, pretty much a straight line               Spinnerbait blade analogy – Willow Leaf  Unbent Shakee Bladed Jig               Vibration:                          Hardest thump               Running depth:                 Shallowest               Hunting Ability:                Exhibits the most, a little twitch is all it takes               Spinnerbait blade analogy – Colorado Blade  Bent Shakee Bladed Jig               Vibration:                          A little less thump than the unbent variety               Running depth:                 Deeper than the unbent               Hunting Ability:                A little harder to get to hunt than the unbent               Spinnerbait blade analogy – Indiana  Naturally the amount and degree of bend effects the results acchieved with the bent design.  As a side note, I was able to get the Original style to hunt quite well by accident. I inadvertently put the trailer on a little off center. This caused the bait to hunt easily with a little twitch.  I have noticed at times the fish seem to greatly prefer one style over another. 1 Quote

That's interesting. I actually find the unbent blade to run the deepest (referring to natural running depth, not by increasing or decreasing speed, rod tip height, line size, ect.). It also had the least amount of vibration, but did hunt the most. The coffin style (original chatterbait), ran the shallowest, but everything else is spot on. The bent blade was what I found to be the best of all worlds with it's strong vibration, good hunting action, and how easy it was to adjust it's running depth. I'm sure the amount of bend, angle of the bend, distance from the end of the blade, split ring vs. no split ring, along with several other factors effect the action of the bait. Just shows how important experimenting can be in the fishing world 2 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 24, 2015 Super User Posted May 24, 2015 I make 3 different versions, well 2 now since I no longer have the heavy coffin blades I use to have. The version I like is the same head and blade as Bluebasser 86 uses, but I don't bend the blade, the 2nd version I make using a spinnerbait head, that is my buddy's favorite. Wither the spinnerbait head, I have the blade then there is 1/2" of wire until you get to the head, what it does is it allows the bait to thump really hard but it runs straight, no hunting at all, and my buddy likes it running straight as he will work it through lanes in grass beds and he has more control. I'm going to bend some blades using different degrees of bend and see how it works, thanks for letting me know what to expect by bending the blade. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 24, 2015 Global Moderator Posted May 24, 2015 What does hunting mean? It's when a bait doesn't follow a straight line during the retrieve but instead kicks off to one side or the other without deflecting off of anything. Quote

Just shows how important experimenting can be in the fishing world I picked up a few bladed jigs made by a fellow here in FL. He uses the same type head as you. Wow, that thing "hunts" without trying! Â Most of my bladed jigs were made by Siebert. I believe he was trying to emulate the very popular Karu bladed jig when they stopped making them (they are now back in business). He uses a football jig. The blade hits the head so it creates more commotion. Â So I think the shape and weight of the head probably enter into the equation. You also bend your blade much more than I do. I'm sure this also enters into the way the bladed jig performs. Â Its may just be me, but if I don't retrieve bladed jigs with the coffin style blades faster than the ones with the Shakee blades, I soon lose them to the rocks which are prevalent where I usually fish (I'm bank bound so once they're hung, they're gone - usually).
