Hello

I recently bought an *** 13 Black Rod

Great rod except I have lost the eye insert on the tip eyelet

*** says they will ship out a new one

They say it is easy to fix

I've never done this before and was hoping for some advice

What epoxy to use

How to keep the eye straight

How much hear to use

Thanks for any help

Heat the old tip with a lighter for just a few seconds to soften the old glue. Grab the old tip with a pair of pliers (a crushing grip isn't necessary) and pull it STRAIGHT OFF OF THE END OF THE ROD. PULLING AT AN ANGLE MAY BREAK THE ROD TIP.  you may have to re-heat for a few more seconds to get the glue to let go.

Once the old tip is removed, get some hot melt glue, melt a little bit and work some into the new tip. Press it (carefully) onto the end of the rod, make sure it's in line with the other guides, let it cool for a few minutes and remove any excess glue. It's a lot easier to do than it is to describe.

Hope this helps!

Use no more heat to get it off than necessary by applying tension to the tiptop while applying the VERY LITTLE HEAT with a lighter.  Use a rubber band to apply the tension.  The rubber band through the eye will not be damaged by the heat to the tube since you will be applying the heat very gently.  The idea is to get the tiptop to come off when the adhesive gives due to the heat and you then will take the heat off and not apply enough to damage the blank.

I cut slender chips off the hot melt stick and put them into the tube of the new tiptop, heat the tiptop, and slide it on.  Check the position and if not right, just gently heat it again and rotate into position.

Or take it to a tackle shop and they will do it for about $5 including the tip.   Just hate to see you ruin a nice rod.  ;)

Most of the factory rods that I see have the tip held on by epoxy. Will the flame from the lighter melt the epoxy?

The tip is actually held in place with a hot glue. what you see behind the tip is the same epoxy used on the thread wraps. It is used to give the look a smooth transition from the blank to the tip.  Excessive heating of the tip will damage the epoxy finish and that is why care should be used when heating the tip.  The hot glue will loose it's grip on the components at a lower temperature than the epoxy.

An easy way to insure alignment of the tip is to rest the rod with the guides pointing straight down. After shreds of the glue stick are placed inside the tip, heat it just enough for the glue to melt and place the tip on the rod. Reheat the tip to ensure the glue is liquified and it will center itself via gravity, then allow it to cool.

Pretty sure that did not take you long to figure out that you need pliers to pull the hot tip off did it? OUCH!!!

I don't think BPS does any repairs to rods! They'll probably will tell you to contact the manufacture for the repair. I've broken my fair share of rod tips & I've always have taken them to a local tackle shop to have them replace because some of the rod companies actually turn their rods in a type of lathe for several hours so that the epoxy around the eyelets are perfectly balance & symmetric with the blank! Netcraft (tackle shop) did that procedure on all my St.Croix rods for around $10- $13 depending on the the type of tip you want!
