Super User WRB Posted May 23, 2015 Super User Posted May 23, 2015 Being OCD helps. I tend to count things almost subconsciously. I don't mean to say it costs concentration. Regards, Josh Don't worry about counting things, we all do it. It's a problem when you must count everything to function. It's not how many cast you make, it's where you cast that counts. Tom Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 23, 2015 Super User Posted May 23, 2015 Josh, you will drive yourself nuts by counting our casts. It is more important to concentrate on each cast and what happens. Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 23, 2015 Super User Posted May 23, 2015 Uhhh! It takes me 3-4 minutes to get some baits back to the boat! Quote
bassinn Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 These are some high average numbers. Today was bad, zero in 4 hours. Just a bite from a small one. Buddy caught 2. Quote
*Hank Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 I don't. I bet they hire someone to do that on their show. I am usually too focused on actually fishing my lure than counting. Same here. Quote

Josh Smith Posted May 24, 2015 Author Posted May 24, 2015 Of course they do. But I count rounds fired, fish caught, casts made. Just seems natural to me. Josh Quote
ColdSVT Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 I can only count to five...after that my culling beam does the counting lol Seriously i dunno...but i do expect one on every cast! Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted May 25, 2015 Super User Posted May 25, 2015 I was the same way! I saw pics and vids of guys catching bass all the time, not realizing that they were spending hours upon hours on the water. Its easy look like a great angler if you only show the parts when you shine. How about an 8 hour fishing show where the guy spends the day throwing everything in his tackle box, messing with mosquitos, snags, reties, sunburn, anger, frustration, but ultimate exuberance when he lands 1 fish! Now thats more like it!!Read "Day on the Lake" in bassmaster. Quote
atcoha Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 I don't count, just keep casting until a bite, hopefully land it, then keep casting til the next. Rinse and repeat. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 26, 2015 Super User Posted May 26, 2015 Read "Day on the Lake" in bassmaster.Major Ledge Fishing is a good example when the top tournament anglers can't get anything going while they know others are doing good.....talk about melt downs! We have good days when everything goes right and days when nothing works, it's called fishing. Dave Jakes Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 It depends on way to many factors to just throw out one simple ratio. The technique you're using is just one key factor. If I'm throwing a big 8 inch swimbait, it might be 1:250. A crankbait might be 1:30. A dropshot might be 1:5. An inline spinner thrown into a school of active bass might be 1:2. Way too many factors... My advice, worry less about the stats and just go out there and enjoy catching what you can! Quote
Super User RoLo Posted May 26, 2015 Super User Posted May 26, 2015 If I miss my casting target, sometimes I'll burn the lure back without fishing it: Should that be counted as 0 casts, 1/2 cast or 1 cast? Sometimes it might take me 3 minutes to retrieve a bottom jig: Should that be counted as 3 casts, 2 casts or 1 cast? I’ve come to the inescapable conclusion that I’m not qualified to count casts. Super User RoLo Posted May 26, 2015 Super User Posted May 26, 2015 Roger, we are dinosaurs, we fish to slow! And ironically, I keep telling myself to slow down. Is that bad when that happens? Roger Quote
Canyon explorer Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 If we are talking quality bass, say 15" minimum" in a large public lake could take hundreds. Quote
Steve17777 Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Depends on the lake or pond and the day. Ive caught a fish every cast on a pond one day and came back to catch nothing the next. Lakes usualy take me about 15 before hooking up on average but can be better or worst. Quote
