I got an old quantum baitcaster from my cousin. It surprisingly works very well even though it looks over 10 years old. The only problem is that it squeaks a lot and I want to open it up and lube it, but I don't know how to open it. It has a button on the bottom that I pressed, but it doesn't do anything. I tried to press it and turn the side plate but it won't budge, could be stuck. It looks like a pretty old model, because I can't find anything about it. On the side it says AC40IC, 4 bearings, 5.1:1 gear ratio.

When does it squeak? Is it when it is being cast or reeled or all the time? That is an old Accurist that happened to be a reel that took a beating but still worked well. It more than likely needs lubed but if you don't know much about them I'd have someone who does know how to service a reel look at it. In the mean time, take off the cast control or spool tension knob, it is located next to the handle behind the drag star if you didn't already know. Take it off and see if there is a little brass disc in the knob, if there is remove it and turn it over to the other side and see if that takes care of the squeaking, that is if the reel has that brass washer in it.

That button at the bottom must be PULLED inward, and then a pin locking the side plate will be released, then you can gently spin the cover off.

Accurists are fabulous reels and yours will make an awesome crankbait reel. Get it properly serviced and put some 12# line on it!

Enjoy!
