Larry Cagnet Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Hello everyone I have a trip planned for burt lake the week of June 20-27. Never fished burt before looking to catch smallmouth. Any advice on depth or types of lures to use would be greatly appriciated. Was also wondering how the fishing is that time of year.i will have the wife and kids with me and would love for them to hang a few nice smallies! Thanks again for any help/advice Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted May 19, 2015 Super User Posted May 19, 2015 Concentrate along the eastside shoreline, then try the mouth of the Sturgeon River, lastly head for Maple & Poverty Bays. Not sure how long you are going to be up there or what kind of boat you have, but if time allows there's always Mullett Lake, or if and when windy conditions may require it, don't pass up the chance to fish the upper part of the Cheboygan River (above M-33) or the Black River (upstream from Myers Creek) There are Gobies in both lakes and the rivers. Don't pass up the chance to fish soft plastic imitations of the forage. 2 Quote

Flegelju Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Hi Larry, I've fished Burt Lake a few times a year (various times of year May-Sept) going back 7 or 8 years. My wife's family has a place in Maple Bay. We will be there for about a week right after you leave. Lund Explorer's advice sounds about right to me. We don't have a real fishing boat and just make do with a small speedboat which limits us quite a bit. It gets really rough out there when it's windy. The lake has very little cover/structure, but when you find the right spot you can do well. I've had great days and lots of skunked days on Burt. At various times we've caught smallmouth on soft plastic stickbaits (3inch variety), crankbaits, rapala husky jerks, nightcrawlers and tubes. Location is going to be your biggest problem as the lake is huge. Look for any structure or cover you can find, and use a method you feel confident in. There are some big ones in there! If you're interested I can get really specific about where/when/how we've caught fish, but I don't feel like giving away all my experience to the internet and writing a novel here. Send me a message if you want to know more. I'd really like to hear how it goes because I will be there right after you leave. Here is a picture of maybe the biggest smallmouth I've caught at Burt, it was a little over 20 inches and caught early July 2010. I do have more recent pictures but I couldn't easily find them. 1 Quote
SchmidtyOU Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Hey Larry I have Been going to Burt lake for about 12 years now and all I fish for is Smallies other than when I go into the rivers for Northerns. My parents have a cabin a mile up the road from Hoppies. I know it seams like cheating but the best way to catch smallies is by finding a drop off from 8-10 feet to about 16-18 feet. anchor right on the ledge and drop a night crawler down a foot from the bottom with a slip shot weight a foot up from the crawler. I also cast out with either lures or the same crawler set up and reel into the boat to get any roamers attention. I am not joking when I say that my father and I catch massive small mouth, and tons of them using this method. Finding rock beds in about 6 to 10 feet of water are also great places to fish for bass with crank baits or spinners. There is a GREAT shallow rock pile on the east middle side of the lake where the lake humps out (you'll see what I mean if you look at a map) go on a bright day and just drive around till you see the rocks. Drifting over that area is a great way to catch some big ones. Ill try to post some pictures later. Good Luck 1 Quote

Super User Lund Explorer Posted June 18, 2015 Super User Posted June 18, 2015 Thanks to everyone for advice and tips it is greatly appriciated.i will post how things are going when I'm there in a week. Big time mayfly hatch going on right now. The kids said the lake's surface was carpeted with hulls a couple of days ago. Might want to consider fishing just below the surface rather than dragging anything on the bottom. 1/8oz jig head with a 3" smoke grub? Quote
Larry Cagnet Posted June 19, 2015 Author Posted June 19, 2015 Thanks for update Lund explorer. Do you think top water baits would work as well? Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted June 19, 2015 Super User Posted June 19, 2015 Smaller stuff on top should work. Do you have a fly rod? Have you ever tried using a casting bubble in front of a fly/bug? I've always done best when I can get as close to match the hatch when the mayflies are going full bore. Quote
Jimib Posted February 11, 2020 Posted February 11, 2020 I will be staying on the northwest part of the lake I'n August. Any tips for bass perch and pike Quote
