Went out today and early I tied on a 1 & 1/2oz weight and a rage craw to do some flipping, not long after I started flipping pads/grass I felt my lure get heavy so I just layed it to em and the fight was on, it felt like I was fighting a huge bass and I thought I'd never get him out from under that mat but when I finally drug him out it turned out to be a big ole bowfin! Thought I finally had me a double digit bass on my line.... Still a awesome fish and a blast catching him. Didn't get a weight because he had already been outta the water too long but I managed to get this picture before I released him.

We all love catching a big bass, but I sometimes think if it is a fun fight and you are putting them back anyway, why not catch a large other species fish.  A memorable catch for me was big asian carp.  Good job getting him in.

Just curious, how do they taste? They look a lot like snakehead, which are pretty good cooked Asian-style.

Supposedly they taste alright, plenty of people eat them. Their caviar is considered a delicacy in places like Louisana.

Awesome catch. :)

Bowfin have that cool, ancient-fish look to them.

Also cool you released it.

I had the same feeling yesterday:  Bass of a lifetime!

Then, after it slugged it out on the bottom for a while, I had my doubts.  I finally landed the 9lb. 9oz. drum ("sheephead").

Bowfin always put up more of a fight than bass, but when they dive in to that vegetation, you can just never know what you got on the end of your line.

I have that feeling way too many times every year with this fish.  Set the hook and drag tings...only to feel a fish doing a barrel roll a couple seconds later and know it is just another big drum...

I caught my first 2 bowfin ever this past week. I guess them destroying a bait would suck, and getting disappointed by them in a tournament wouldn't be fun, but man do they fight! I had fun catching them and don't think I could be too made at them if we had them around here.

I love targeting them, went and fished for them after school with cut bait and light spinning rods all the time... At my Nanas we have a little swampy area with tons of them!
