I'm in need of some new sunglasses. I was wondering if anyone has run across any companies that cater to fishermen that do prescription sunglasses?

Maui Jims are the best you can get. I've been wearing them for years and years.

I haven't tried all the different brands so I can't say if one brand is better than another, but I suspect all of the big names you hear about probably have high quality polarized lenses and frames.  I have been wearing Maui Jims for a few years and they are awesome.  However, as time passes and prices rise I can't help but wonder if I might be able to find a less expensive option.  My eye doctor sells Maui Jims and Kaenon but no Costa Del Mar, Oakley, Wiley X, etc.

You can get polarized lenses made up for most brand name frames

I'm sticking with the MJ's.. My eyes are extremely sensitive. They're the only lens that keep my eyes from burning and watering.

I recently got some Liberty Sport prescription sunglasses which my optometrist offered as sport/active sunglasses.  I got the Trailblazer DE version and I really like them.   They have a removable cushion around the inside of the frames that feel good against your skin and the lenses are of course polarized.  My particular glasses are marketed as motorcycle sunglasses and they work good on a fast moving boat. Liberty Sport also makes the Rec Specs line of sport glasses, if you remember those.  The Trailblazer DE version was a bit pricey, around $165, but they are prescription.

Your'e pretty much spending the bulk of the money on the frame, not the lenses.  A small handful of companies make the majority of brands of frames and lenses, Safilo & Luxottica 2 of the premier companies.  Costa may be one of the very few independent companies, I'm not sure.

I wear progressives, whether regular or sunglasses they cost me $250 to about $450.  I can buy the same frame and the same lens for $250, I don't go to the $450 store anymore lol, I found a new place to shop.

Do I wear prescription polarized for fishing, no I don't.  Why, they cut glare but they don't see thru choppy water.  The nature of polarized lenses always make things darker, sometimes too dark depending on the angle of the sun.  I wear flip ups on my prescription glasses, I'm constantly flipping them up an down, sometimes I see better without the polarization.

The axis on my prescription has to be perfect, I've taken glasses back to have them remade.  Fitting of the frames is extremely important as well as measuring the lenses to your eyes.

That's why I will not buy eyewear from online source, despite to some very attractive pricing.

SirSnook, you are quite correct on the manufacturing of the lenses.  It is quite the monopoly and if I recall Luxottica is the biggest dog.

Perhaps some of you can help me. I recently decided I needed sunglasses while fishing. I tried a bunch at BPS and finally bought a $20 pair because I could not tell the difference in the store between low end and high end. After fishing a couple weeks, I took them back. What I find is that with all sunglasses that are non-prescription, I just cannot see as well with them on. In the store, I have tried countless types, low to high, and nothing seems to be comfortable. It just seems I can't see well, everything is not as sharp. I test them by looking at a sign with writing on it in the store, and note if I think I can see well enough. Not.

So, I surmised that I need prescription sunglasses. Does that ring true?

The Maui Jim says "love them or your money back." I certainly like that guarantee. I wonder how much Rx sunglasses would cost?

Lastly, the last pair of regular glasses I bought was about a year ago and I shopped hard for good frames and decided to use a real optometrist eyeglass center versus using Walmart or Costco or chain store, thinking I would get better quality lenses because my Walmart glasses over the past few years have not been impressive. Disappointment! I scratched my "superior" doctor's office lenses within mere days and I have no idea how I did it because I never dropped them. It's still a mystery to me. I also wonder if there is a scratch-resistant lense that works.

For great vision, I don't mind paying for it.

Not that I'm connected, I'm not but many years I had friends in the biz.  I would buy frames from a sales rep, then have them filled at an optician.  At that time I paid $15-25 for frames that sold for $150+ retail, that was 20 years ago, but you get the idea.

Yes Luxottica is huge, not only do they own lots of designer labels, they own Oakley and Ray Ban.  Besides frames and lenses they own stores too, Lenscrafters, Pearle, Sunglass hut, Sears optical too.

Both Costa and Wiley-X offer Rx sunglasses.  I have Costas with readers built in and really like them.

Don't you have a local optometrists ?

Just go to your eye dr and buy a pair of prescription polorized sunglasses.

It really is just that easy.

Try Costco. Great polarized sunglasses at a fraction on the big box eye glass stores.

Insurance covered the majority of my prescription Costa Fantails. I think I still had to pay like $20 out of pocket and a little extra for the green mirrorization, but overall it was A LOT cheaper for me than a standard pair would've cost me at Academy.

I think I'm going to go through ADS sports eyewear and get a pair. I have some what of a high prescription and they're the only place that I've seen that makes prescriptions for sunglasses with high prescriptions. Will try them on locally and then order them online.
