Fishing&Tennis Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Shimano Calais 201A vs Shimano Curado I 201A vs Curado E This is the older Calais not the DC. I can get All the aforementioned reels for +/- $50. I will be mainly fishing ponds for bass. And occasionally use this in saltwater either for inshore or to catch live bait for offshore fishing. Super User FishTank Posted May 16, 2015 Super User Posted May 16, 2015 I use to have a Calais 201A and loved it. It was a tank tough. It was smooth beyond compare, casting was fantastic and it was by far the best reel I have ever used. If you're getting it for $50 or so, it is a steal. One word of warning, it is a pain to work on. The other you mentioned are also a steal. Enjoy...... Quote
Fishing&Tennis Posted May 16, 2015 Author Posted May 16, 2015 Sorry I mean +/- $50 in price difference not total price Quote
EvanT123 Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 To be honest. I don't think you will see much difference between the three in casting ability and lure/fish retrieval ability. Shimano reminds me of car companies. Do you want a honda or an Acura. They both do the same thing. One model might have a few more refinements than the other. Quote
Fishing&Tennis Posted May 16, 2015 Author Posted May 16, 2015 I'm leaning towards Curado I since it is the newest and because it has xship. The Calais I bet will be smooth as butter but will be heavier. Quote

Being primarily an offshore fisherman I normally pay more for reels that can take on big fish yet are still light. Especially for vertical jigging. To me no baitcaster should be challenged by any bass. Hence past a certain point of basic smoothness and durability not Rly necessary to pay more. Back to what you said about them all doing the same thing. So basically go with the cheaper and newer one for service and parts? I'll probably go with the Curado I. I like that is has x-ship. X-ship in my saltwater reels (I.e. Ocea Jigger) makes a big difference in power and stableness of crank. Quote

John G Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 If it were me, I would get the new Curado over the other two based on looks and ergonomics and I am assuming that the new Curado is going to be a great caster. If you were talking about the Calais CL-100A or the Curado 50E then that would be different. I am assuming that you are talking about the Curado 200E. 1 Quote

Fishing&Tennis Posted May 16, 2015 Author Posted May 16, 2015 Would the Daiwa Tatula R be in the running? Quote
John G Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 The Calais 201A I think the one before the DC. And the Curado 200E. So Curado I? I just bought a Curado 200HG but I haven't had the opportunity to use it yet. I love the size and the looks and it's plenty smooth. If it cast as good as it looks, I will be thrilled. I had the Scorpion version of the CU200E and so far, I like the new Curado better. I also have an older Left handed Calais that came with a rod that I won on eBay but I haven't used it cause it's left handed. While it' is smooth, it is also big. I like the Curado I more.I have never used the Tatula but it sure get a lot of press because of its popularity. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted May 16, 2015 Super User Posted May 16, 2015 Would you take it over a new Curado I if the Calais cost $60 more? Maybe... First thing to consider is weight. The Calais is heavy. Is the Calais used compared to a new Curado I? If you are going to use it for light saltwater, then the Calais would definitely be my choice. Also, there is just something special about the original Calais. It has the super wow factor that no other reel has given me. I wish I never sold it. I paid about $200 on sale a local tackle shop and sold it for more than $300, used obviously. Quote
