I hate hypothetical questions as much as the next guy but...

If you were to start a lure company what handful of crankbait colors (5-7) would you choose for your line-up?

Here is mine

1.Firetiger

2.Shad

3.Red/Black Crawdad

4.Trout (More of a generic baitfish pattern than a traditional trout color scheme.)

5.Chart. with black back

I always go with the following and try to include baits for salt and fresh like Rapala does and not market to any type of species....

1-Chrome blue, Bone, Chart/Black, all chrome, black & white, gold & black, Clown...

Posted

1. Shad (something resembling sexy shad)

2. Crawfish (brown with orange bottom)

3. Bluegill

4. Shad in brighter colors (chartreuse/bright blue or chartreuse/bright green)

5. Shad in chrome (chrome/blue)

Here in Indiana, bluegill colors and brown/orange craw colors work best for me.

Most of the water I fish is murky with some occasional clear water, but it's never super clear.

Selling crankbaits requires offering colors angler want currently, not offering necessarily what is actually catching bass.

My top bass catching colors for deep diving cranks are;

Ghost white, white with micro silver flakes in skeleton pattern, yellow eyes.

Black with red micro flake crawdad pattern.

Shad, white/chrome with green/blue micro flake back, red eyes.

Baby bass, white with green back, green bass pattern sides, red eyes.

Red/orange craw with black crawdad pattern.

These work for me, however would be poor sellers in today's market.

My market colors would be:

Holographic patterns with life like baitfish translucent patterns.

1. Blue back Shad with gold/chrome scale sides, pearl white belly.

2. Green back Shad with silver/chrome scale sides, pearl white belly.

3. Black/silver back with silver/chrome scale sides, pearl belly

4. Black/ gold back with gold/chrome scale side, pearl belly.

5. Blue/purple back with silver/chrome scale side, pearl with orange belly.

6. Dark red back, orange/red crawdad side, orange belly.

7. Dark green back with gold/orange scale side, pearl belly.

Pick out new names to help distinguish the new lures.

These colors will catch bass everywhere and hopefully a lot of anglers!

All the colors. I have every color that Norman offers in there Thin N and Fat Boy. I have every color that Bomber offers in there Fat A and Model A.

Just using or narrowing down a few colors is tough. Sooner or later they all catch fish under certain conditions.

The cranks in the craw fish colors are hot. The cranks with the Orange bottoms are also hot too.

I'm with you using different names for the colors.

I'd be different and use soft plastic colors...

4. Morning Dawn

Suprisingly everybody's answer was similar.

Do you have any clever alternative names for colors?  For example calling chart./black back Roasted Peep.

Cabela's has a 2" crankbait (Dig-It) in chartreuse black back and they call it Hot Bass. The color pattern is their standard Baby Bass but with chartreuse and black.

So maybe Hot Shad or something if it's a standard black back pattern.
