I'm going to be moving to Richmond VA soon and I'm interested in information on fishing Lake Gaston.  Is it easy to navigate on? Is it a good crankbait lake? Do the water levels fluctuate drastically depending on the time of year?

Any info would be greatly appreciated..

Lake Gaston is great!!

Navigation is very easy.

Depending on time of year they can be. There is a lot of dock fishing.

Water levels are legally required to only fluctuate a little. Lake Kerr is used to maintain levels in Gaston. It is a beautiful lake.

Lake Gaston is a really nice lake.  Main bass patterns throughout the year usually revolve around fishing docks and hydrilla, which there are tons of both at Gaston.  When Kerr is getting a lot of rain and they are running a lot of water through Gaston it can get pretty muddy at times, especially up the river.  Creeks usually have good water clarity year round.

Outstanding Gents! I can't wait to make my way out there. I'll let you know how I do.  It's always a challenge to fish a new lake but but when you finally start to make some progress there are few things more rewarding! Again, thank you very much.

Brandon, also check out:

Lake Anna

Lake Chesdin

Buggs Island

Chickahominy Lake

Diascund Reservoir

Smith Mountain Lake

And there are a number of rivers from the Potomac to the Nottoway to enjoy, too.

Gaston is awesome...Docks are a big pattern for sure, but you can pretty much fish anyway you want to and catch them.

Another cool thing is that in the past few years more and more spotted bass are showing up.  I caught 6 during a trip down there this April, including one that was around 4 lbs on a practice day and a 2.5 lber on one of the tournament days.  You'll also catch an occasional smallmouth.

To expand on the water levels...it has 2 feet of variance that it's 'allowed' to operate in...So while the level remains pretty consistent, water is regularly moving in and out to maintain that consistency.  You'll notice this the most around the bridges in the creeks, water will be rushing in or out.

You'll like the bass fishing out in this area, lot of variety.  The tidal rivers, especially the Potomac and James/Chickahominy, should be on your 'must-fish' list too.

Well... I finally made it to Lake Chesdin today. Got SKUNKED! The whole lake looks bassy. I was throwing a square bill and frog around grass points. I also tried a DD22 on rocky drop offs. I've got some work to do..... The lake is freaking beautiful though. It was nice riding around all day even though I didn't catch anything.

One quick question.... What is the furthest west you will fish? I don't want to get caught by and obstruction under the water and damage my boat.

Thanks!

Gaston is awesome. My girls parents have a house on pea hill so thats the creek I stay in mainly. Plenty of docks and grassy points. I got my personal best there last year on the 4th of July.

Stay out of the "Swamp" and the part of the lake leading into the "Swamp."

Lots of hidden stumps and boulders leading into the "Swamp" and unless you know the channel and how to maneuver into and out of the "Swamp" please refrain from trying your luck and going into that part of the upper end of the lake where the Appomattox Rivers flows into the reservoir.

Don't go too far into Namozine Creek. You can fish the bridge area and then head to the right after you enter and fish that bank and into the grass. Good place to rest and have lunch. You will catch lots of small ones but all of the lake's species are in the area to the right after you go under the bridge in Namozine Creek.

Other than for the "Swamp" and the back of Namozine Creek the only other waters off limits are by the dam making the entire lake good to go.

Have fun and don't forget Whipponock Creek. Everyone has to fish this area if they fish The Chick!!!!

Now, why did you get skunked on Chesdin?  We can discuss it when you call me on the local bass clubs as per my PM to you.

Make that Chesdin. The Chick was a mental lapse.

Sam!!! Thanks for the awesome info. I'll give you a call tomorrow about the club. I'm waiting on final approval from my boss for the go ahead. Needless to say, I'm excited about the prospect.

On another great note, I finally made it to Lake Gaston today and I caught my personal best in Pretty Creek. She slammed a Snag Proof Frog in some Hydrilla. Lake Gaston is a great lake. The boaters do get out of control come around 1200 though. All in all a great day on the water. Thanks to all for the info once again!

I had a blast at Gaston this weekend. Found a school hammering some shad and caught a bunch throwing the ole' Sexy Dawg. All but one was a spotted bass.  Nothing beats a topwater bite!

Tough day of fishing, finished 8th with around 7.5 pounds and 3 fish. First place was 5 fish for a little over 11 pounds.
