shanksmare Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 In order to be able to watch and enjoy baseball, you need to understand and appreciate the cognitive aspect. It's a brain game through and through, which is why it's losing popularity in the U.S. Not many people understand or care to understand baseballs details which make up the whole competition. People see baseball as "hit ball with stick", so when guys aren't smashing 450 ft home runs every at-bat, they get bored. Baseball is far from simple, and understanding it certainly requires another level of thinking than other sports. Especially after watching hockey, watching baseball is a torture. In hockey there is often non-stop action for many minutes at a time. Whereas in baseball the action occurs in 2 to 15 second bursts (mostly 2 seconds) with minutes of dead time between each of these bursts.. Hockey, football, basketball and even soccer are reactive sports. The players react to to situations pretty much instinctively. Baseball players must think about what they are going to do before each pitch. If you wait to decide what to do when the ball comes to you. most likely the game will pass you by. When I was a kid and baseball players salaries were measured in thousands of dollars, not millions, they would sign autographs after games for free. Now that their salaries are in the millions of dollars they charge kids for autographs. Back then most games took 2 to 2 1/2 hours to play (I was a habitual boxscore reader) whereas now they take 3 1/2 hours plus to play. On every pitch it seems as if their is a contest between the pitcher and the batter as to who will take the most time. Boring ....
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted May 15, 2015 Super User Posted May 15, 2015 What happens if this guy comes in and plays great? Suddenly Brady is not worth so much. Belicheat loves to go with younger players?? Once upon a time the Patriots had a first rate, all-star quarterback by the name of Drew Bledsoe. The Pats were well on their way to the playoffs 'til he got injured, and his backup took over. Though Bledsoe recovered, his career never did. The backup quarterbacked the Pats to their first Super Bowl win. There was a lot of chatter on the local talk shows when Bellicheck named Brady to start the big game, and the rest is history. But for Bledsoe's injury, where would Brady be today?
Super User flyfisher Posted May 15, 2015 Author Super User Posted May 15, 2015 I am not sure hockey is non-stop action, is it more than baseball sure but just because a guy is skating around doesn't mean it is more action than an NBA player walking the ball up the court. I do agree that hockey is the most active of the major sports but it isn't quite non-stop, it just looks like it because of the medium in which it is being played.
Super User senile1 Posted May 15, 2015 Super User Posted May 15, 2015 I think the evidence in the report is strong, though circumstantial. Now the Patriots and Brady have come out with the story of the deflator and inflator being terms for each of the employees whose desire was to lose weight and gain weight respectively. If that were the case, why did it take a few days to come up with this story? I call BS on that one. Brady is guilty as charged. Brady is one of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game. To me, there is no debate on that one. In 2006, Brady and Manning successfully lobbied the league to allow them to provide their own footballs. All teams now do this. I highly suspect others of cheating as well. This doesn't get Brady off the hook though. Similar to speeding, some get caught and others don't. You are still guilty of speeding. Lastly, Ray Rice gets suspended two games for knocking his girlfriend's lights out on video. Brady gets four for cheating. What a statement that makes. The NFL needs to get its priorities straight. I don't want to decrease Brady's punishment, but increase Ray Rice's.
rboat Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 Brady, a sixth round draft pick would just be another QB if it wasn't for his first cheat known as "The Tuck Rule" - aka- Brady fumbles the ball in the snow. I always love how if any defensive player gets within sneezing distance of Brady, the officials call them for roughing the passer. What a joke!
Super User flyfisher Posted May 15, 2015 Author Super User Posted May 15, 2015 I don't think the tuck rule is cheating as it was a legitimate interpretation of the rule which was later changed without much fanfare a few years back, much like the definition of a reception has changed over the years as well. The information is circumstantial but it is a lot of it and criminal cases have been decided on solely circumstantial evidence. I think he could have helped his case if he just turned over his phone and text messages or whatever in the beginning. They even offered to have his lawyer handle that part of the investigation. It will be interesting though because on appeal what new evidence does he have? if it actually gets to the court system, which i hope it doesn't, i have a feeling his phone records will be subpoenaed and then we will all know if he was hiding something. I still think he could have very easily said I was unaware of the rule and told them to let some air out because I like it that way, I'll take the punishment and move on. He likely wouldn't have to go through all this mess but i have a feeling he knows he is guilty and is not worried about the ramifications of cheating because it hasn't impacted them in the past. I believe that the Cheatriots as an organization, Belicheat and Brady all felly that they are bigger than the NFL. Interesting that the arbiter is Goodel too lol
Super User F14A-B Posted May 15, 2015 Super User Posted May 15, 2015 Brady needs to stop whining like a woman, man up & take his punishment...and yes.. He could have helped clear himself & the patriots by "helping" the truth to come out,( phone records) However he says no, why? Because he's guilty, plain & simple.. Tom Brady, Take your medicine and get a set of balls ( properly inflated of course)
Super User Catch and Grease Posted May 15, 2015 Super User Posted May 15, 2015 The NFL shop has stopped taking orders for the this..... Actually they officially said they would not fill orders for it but it's still funny. Is this for real?? Haha now that's funny...
Super User K_Mac Posted May 15, 2015 Super User Posted May 15, 2015 I completely agree with Brady and the Patriots being punished for play outside of the rules, especially with their history. The bigger issue IMO is the way the league has handled this. It is clear (to me anyway) that the league knew that liberties were being taken with the game balls, and if they didn't then there is a serious level of incompetency at the highest level. It is far easier to blame Brady and the Pats for cheating than to fix a system that is clearly broken. The current system of ignoring problems until they make the headlines and then playing dumb is bad for the league, the players, and the fans. 1

Super User Catch and Grease Posted May 15, 2015 Super User Posted May 15, 2015 That list counts cheating that happened decades ago, and also counts stuff like flags (cheap hits and cheating as they call it) and one action from a coach account for 20% of the steelers "cheat points"? That's seems like a dumb list and Id only look at it for fun and not to seriously judge a team because its very opinionated.
Super User Catch and Grease Posted May 15, 2015 Super User Posted May 15, 2015 Like the patriots illegal video taping is only 4 "cheat points" but a coach interfering with a game is 9???? 1
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 15, 2015 Super User Posted May 15, 2015 That list is flawed. If the Raiders were the 12th biggest cheaters we would be winning more than 2 games a year!
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted May 15, 2015 Super User Posted May 15, 2015 That list is flawed. If the Raiders were the 12th biggest cheaters we would be winning more than 2 games a year! Not necessarily. They could be as inept at cheating as they are at playing football. 1

It really is a joke.

It gets boring if there is no "action", but if you understand and appreciate the cognitive side of baseball, the WHOLE game is action. Sure it's not like football with guys mashing each other, but I don't need such visual stimulation to hold my attention. The action in baseball doesn't come in bursts if you at all understand the cognitive aspect of the sport. Baseball is not just a sport. It's also a game, and it can draw many similarities with something like Chess. Baseball is the truly the greatest sport, and nothing else combines individual competition, team-based play, and a heavy dose of calculated strategy and cognition like baseball. 2
Super User Lund Explorer Posted May 15, 2015 Super User Posted May 15, 2015 Does anyone else think it would lead to a person's credibility that they include along with their Patriot's whine a statement of what team they support? Inflate your own balls for once and go out on a limb by telling us how your team has never cheated. At this point, these threads are sounding like a nonpolitical version of Faux News! FYI - I think they all cheat, including all of your favorites. 2

I understand enough to comprehend batting averages, era's, errors, pitching (i was a pitcher, had a decent fast ball 90mph), o just never got into watching. The cerebral aspect is why fans cringe during a strike, it throws all the averages off etc Its also why strikes work for baseball more than any other sport. I like going to the stadium (park) to watch a pro game, just something about a TV game.

Hardly a day goes by that something isn't in the news raising eyebrows, court dockets are full of cases. Pats spying on teams, heck industrial espionage is as old as the hills, lol. We tend to look at our home teams as "our team", scrutinized by both media and fans on just about every move they make, we like to be involved. I'm sure many of us own Samsung, Apple, Microsoft, H/P products to name a few, do we scrutinize their business practices and classify them as " our companies", I think not.

Super User K_Mac Posted May 16, 2015 Super User Posted May 16, 2015 I don't think it is delusional to expect the NFL to enforce the rules. It is not delusional to expect that to be done fairly without money and egos calling the shots. For the record I am a hometown fan, although the Rams may not be here much longer and I don't really care much. I love the Blues and the Cards. The Blues have been breaking my heart for years and I've threatened to become a Blackhawk's fan, but that probably won't happen even if they win the Cup-again. I think Baseball is the best of the bunch. Played well, it requires athleticism, skill, and brains. I also think the designated hitter is an abomination making the American League inferior... 1
Super User fishinfiend Posted May 16, 2015 Super User Posted May 16, 2015 I hate Brady and that franchise.. F the Pats..
shanksmare Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Like the patriots illegal video taping is only 4 "cheat points" but a coach interfering with a game is 9???? The Spygate infraction that the patriots were involved in was not for video taping. The video taping was perfectly legal. The infraction was for videotaping in an area without a roof. If you were going to intentionally cheat would you do it with 85,000 witnesses? If Belicheck wanted video from near the field I'm sure he could have gotten thousands to volunteer. Or even simpler - use a telephoto lens. This was another example of an NFL rule that many teams were violating .. until that magical day the NFL decided to enforce it. Interestingly enough the team that reported the violation were doing the same thing at Foxboro the year before. But if it makes you feel better about your less than stellar teams, keep rationalizing that the Patriots MUST be cheating! Otherwise I guess you might have to admit that your favorite team and its management suck. Ya HATE us cause you AIN't us!!!
