I have 4 $50 BPS gift cards burning a hole in my pocket since Christmas.  I was looking for an all around cool pair of polarized sun glasses for fishing, driving hiking, etc.  I've never had an expensive pair of sunglasses, my most pricey pair was maybe 30 bucks. Does anyone have any experience with Oakley Turbines?  If they suck, do you have any other recommendations in that price range? Around $180.

I wore Oakley's for quite a while, that is until I decided to bite the bullet and buy a pair of Costa Del Mar glasses.  There are a ton of brands out there: Oakley, Costa, Wiley-X, Ray Ban, Maui Jim, Kaenon...........my advice would be to do your research online and to also make a point of trying them on in a store.

I have them and absolutely love them. Design is awesome. I have the clear/smoke with orange lenses. All glasses must be polarized so I would account some extra cost for that.

Oakley has the worst lenses out there in the 100+ dollar range. The frames are alright (not my style), cost as have much better quality lenses and a better warranty. I have a pair of 50$ sunglasses from dicks, I'm using until I can replace my old costas that I lost. They are about the same quality lens as Oakley. If you are just looking for a cool frame then get fake sunglasses. Costas are much better for fishing aswell, they are like night and day from oakleys. Do a little research and you will see.

I think there was a discussion about this and a doctor explained all the lenses and the quality.

You own any Oakley glasses? Have you ever worn a pair? I have and I also had Maui Jim sunglasses and both of those I chose over Coatas. Maui Jims had better optical quality but were heavy, Costas were good but they too are heavy, Oakley has similar optical quality with an impact resistant lens and you forget they are even on your face they are so light. Right now I have Eye Surrenders, $50 dollar sunglasses that I believe are one of, if not the best sunglass under $100 and the lenes while good, are not Oakley so the statement you made is complete hogwash, please don't act like a 14 year old spouting "stuff you heard", learn from experience and don't knock until you try, you may be surprised at what you learn.

This is what happens when people come here to just ask for a little bit of advice on something they have their eye on. Too much personal opinion and not enough experience. There is a lot of personal opinion on the internet, not enough actual experience. We could throw a ton of different variables into the equation but that really wasn't the question from the Op. If I could build a pair of glasses, I would use Oakley's frames and Maui Jim lenses. That's just me.

Yes and yes. You are comparing the frames of 1 model to a whole brand. You trying to say that all Costas are heavy, that is just a bunch of "hogwash". Ten out of 10 times I am going to trust a doctor over you. So stuff I heard isn't near accurate. So the only real thing you have managed to say is that Costas are heavy, I know the answer to this ever so difficult problem, BUY A DIFFERNT FRAME. You seem to not understand Costa sells over 40 differnt frame models. So please don't act like you are smarter than me when you are unable to state more than 1 serious reasoning behind you're opinon.

BTW using the "your only 14" excuse just makes you look dumb.

Before you question anyone's intelligence, you might want to work on your pronoun usage and spelling.

People complain that Costa's glass lenses are heavy, it has nothing to do with frames.  I seriously doubt there is much difference between Oakley's polycarbonate lenses and Costa's polycarbonate lenses.   In other words, it's your opinion, which shouldn't be stated as fact.   Learn some manners, listen more and speak less, it will serve you well.

I haven't seen the Oakley Turbines, but I do wear Oakleys.  Since I bought my first pair 20 years ago until today, that's all I wear.  I've never had an issue with the finish coming off a pair (I average almost 6 years a pair).  I do, however, think that my wife's Ray Bans have a better image quality.  The choice is really up to you on what you get get.  Try on a bunch of different styles, brands and colors.  Go with what works for you.

If there is no difference then how are costas heavier?

Just... Be quiet. You're now being annoying.

Op, honestly, go with the ones you like the best. Just make sure you spend the extra money to get the lenses Polarized. Makes a HUGE difference. Cannot even go back to regular lenses anymore lol.

That was an actual question. I am confused how two things that are the same can be differnt weights.

I have been using Oakleys for 22+ years. It is all in the lens selection for the purpose you intend on using them for. I have 2 flak jackets now. One with black iridium polarized lenses and one with deep blue iridium polarized lenses (angling specific). I also have a set of bottlecaps in emerald iridium polarized. I use the deep blue flak jackets for medium to bright light on open water. I use the emerald bottle caps on overcast days or river fishing in the woods (heavy shade). They work great. If I were to take the black iridium lenses that are the darkest I own and least effective fishing lenses, then go brook trout fishing... I would probably be disappointed in how they work. As for the above post about how 2 things made out of similar materials can have different weights, the answer is easily. The density of the similar materials, the amount of material used relative to the size of the lenses. Etc. A 1971 chevelle and a 1971 dodge challenger are similar. Both have similar dimensions, build materials, and similar size engines for their respective option packages.. Yet the challenger is hundreds of pounds heavier than the similarly equipped chevelle. You are comparing apples to apples, with the problem being you are comparing granny smith apples to red delicious apples if you can see where I am going with this.

Costas glass lenses are heavy.  Oakley doesn't make glass lenses.  I said their polycarbonate lenses are similar.

Ok, gotcha now. Glass will always be heavier but I think that it's worth it with the clarity it provides.

Well this has been entertaining to read.  I appreciate the strong brand loyalty you guys have. :) :) :)

I have tried on everything from Wiley's to Costas to Solar Bats. I have given my wallet to the guy at BPS so I could take each pair glasses outside to test, since didn't feel I could make a decision based only on the scant light indoors... The Turbines fit my crooked head better than any other glasses and I could not tell any difference between them and the $300 Maui Jims as far as polarization, though admittedly I was only looking into the little fountain in front of the store to test them out.  All in all, I think the Turbines look the coolest, fit my lopsided dome the best and have comparable lens technology so will probably go with them.
