Going to be picking one up here during the TW sale. That's the plan anyhow. However I will be wanting it to double as my jerkbait/topwater rod. Will it do the jobs I need it to? Main uses wil be squarebills and lipless cranks. I don't throw jerkbaits a lot so it will see those less. Then it will see some poppers and spook type baits. It mentions everything but jerkbaits in the description so I'm not too worried about the other baits. First hand experience is always better than a description on a website though. Thanks BR

I use it for all treble hook presentations. I love it for lipless and squarebills, like it for topwater and jerkbaits. But I also don't throw a ton of topwaters or jerkbaits.

There are 3 total Champion cranking rods that fit the 705cb bill. There is one from there graphite line that has a moderate fast action, then a 705cb moderate fast and a 705cb fast from there glass series. Not 100% which one you were looking at?

I have the 705cb fast glass rod. Love it for a variety of reaction baits. It will handle your squarebills, your lipless baits, topwaters especially your spooks and sammys. I throw heavier jerkbaits on mine like the 110 and 100 series pointers. I have also used spinnerbaits and chatterbaits on there with no issue. Your only problems will come from fishing reaction baits "with a rip it through the weeds" mentality and lighter jerkbaits loading properly. It is truly a good multi purpose reaction rod. Not my first choice for jerkbaits or bladed baits but you should be fine if they arent real light or fished/ripped through weeds. I got a friend that owns 5 of the 705cb glass rods. A pretty good rod know doubt.

The 704 could be worth a look if you fish lighter baits...

I have that rod and it's great. As mentioned above if you are throwing lighter cranks the 704 may be a better option.

It's the graphite 705cb that's a mh/mf 1/4-1oz

It's one of the new Fury rods. The 663 might be a better choice due to length. My shortest rod is 7' so it wouldn't hurt to have a 6'6 on hand.

Main duties would be.

1.5 and 2.5 SB's

7/16 shadow rap jerkbaits

I have a Phenix 713 for lighter stuff.

The 704 is more what I'm looking for due to its length, but I'm not planning on spending that much. I usually use my 703 or other mh rods for all that I've mentioned above. Handle length is the issue with jerkbaits though. I have short arms or maybe it's how I hold the rod close to me. Not a big deal on my boat, but I bought a ride 115 and will be fishing out of it a good bit this season. Also beating the banks a bit.

I use the 684CB for most of my jerkbait and topwater needs, and I would love to get my hands on a 5 rated version as well. If you prefer the little bit longer length for those presentations, I say go for it. The Champion series will not let you down.

While I can't be sure how the Fury rod will be in comparison to the Champion, I can reply based on using a Champion 705cb graphite.  I use this rod for my 1.5 and 2.5 squarebills.  I know some people would prefer a 704cb for their 1.5 size but I'm not as concerned with casting a bait and the whole "tip loading" ordeal as I am with hooking a fish and landing a fish.  I don't throw the shadow rap baits but I see that their weight is the same as a Lucky Craft Staysee 90.  The rod I personally use for that is the 704cb, however I don't feel the 705cb is overpowered at all for it, and will suit you just fine when throwing that bait.  I know a lot of people actually prefer the 705cb for their topwater uses...  I personally use a 734c myself, but if I couldn't use that rod for some reason, I would be very happy with the 705cb for my walking baits and topwaters.

The 705cb is the rod I recommend around here (Northern and Central California) as an all use treble hook bait rod.  I think it's a very versatile starting point for crankbait rods.  The only I wouldn't consider it ideal for would be deep diving crankbaits, however it will still get the job done.  We have lakes where a ripbait is going to be primarily what you throw, and our grass bodies of water where a squarebill crank is a primary technique.  When I'm recommending a rod that can do both of those duties for someone, I recommend the 705cb.  I know a lot of people who have been very happy with it, I hope you are too.

Thanks DTack. That's the type of first hand experience I was looking for.

I now own 684, 685 and 705cb. 705 is a great medium diver and spook rod imo. Tried it for jerkbaits, while its good I just prefer shorter.
