mathnerdm Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 So I have a Perception Sport Pescador sit on angling yak I just picked up last week. Unfortunately, I couldn't take it out till tomorrow. My question is, the boat has 2 rod holders right behind the seat that are angled towards the back of the boat. Is there any chance if I get a fish on while trolling, and since the rod holders are already angled toward the back, the rod may get pulled out of the holder? This is probably a ridiculous concern, but if it's not, would getting some rod leashes help to give me peace of mind? Thanks for any input! Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 I'm a new kayaker, also. I keep a leash on my rods most of the time that I'm not using them. Maybe paranoia and I'll relax as time goes by, but I find comfort in the leashes. I picked up these and keep one on my paddle, as well. http://www.amazon.com/Paddle-Leash-Leashes-Total-Carabiner/dp/B00MXJFXOE Quote

I did buy one leash for my paddle (not sure why I didn't for my rods lol)... Have you ever tried trolling with rod holders angled to the rear? Did they feel like they could be pulled out? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 Leashes and other random cordage is a hazard in a kayak. For rod holders, I use a combination of flush mount and adjustable trolling style holders. I like to have one or two free spots free for when I land a fish. You can also use a scupper hole as a temporary holder. 2 Quote
FrogFreak Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I've fished out of a Kayak for 3 years now and I've never used a leash. To answer your original question, I think your rod could pull out of the flush mount holder. It depends on the thickness of the butt end and other factors. I would use a Scotty that "locks" the rod in for a trolling application if you want to be sure that it won't come out. The flush mount holders are really only meant to store the rod until its used. Super User J Francho Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 Never had a fish pull a rod out of a flush mount. They're under the water, below the boat. No way for them to lift a rod out of the holder. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 I have that same kayak. But mine's a couple years old and only has one flush mount rod holder. No, they won't pull it out. But chances are you'll have a hard time getting to it. It's in an awkward position to grab. I only use it to store a rod. I took a milk crate and zip tied 3 more rod holders in it so I can stowe 4 and use one, the perfect number of rods. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 Also, I once lost my balance bad enough I had to bail out. I had 4 rods in the yak. It didn't turn over. I just ruined an iPhone4 and got my wallet wet. Lesson learned there. Enjoy your new ride. (Don't try standing in it). Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 Get a small 1.5L dry bag. I like the softer Sea to Summit bags. Quote
kikstand454 Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 I personally don't like the flush mount behind the seat holders. .... but its entirely because of how close it puts my reel to the water- not its actual function. If you feel comfortable using it- it'll be fine. Its designed to do exactly what you're talking about doing. I prefer to use mine as a great place to stow my net. Quote
keyvike Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 I'm a kayak basser myself. Those rod holders are meant to just hold the rods you're not using. If you want to troll i'd suggest getting a scotty mount rodholder and mount it in front of you where you can easily reach the rod. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted May 19, 2015 Super User Posted May 19, 2015 i've been snagged numerous times even while trolling from the rear flush mounts and never sent a rod overboard that way yet.... couldn't agree more with John that the extra cords are a serious hazard not to mention a PITA.
