When it comes to tournament fishing, I don't waste more then about 5 minutes trying to get a lure unstuck regardless of how much the lure costs. I feel that time is one of your biggest ally when it comes to winning a tournament. When it comes to just fishing for fun, i'll try and try and try until its freed, especially when its a $20+ lure 1 Quote
Steveo-1969 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 As I don't use expensive lures, this is an easy answer for me. "Not long" ha-ha If I'm bank fishing, I'll give the bow and arrow a couple tries. It's amazing how well this works! If that doesn't work, I walk along the bank and try bow and arrow again. If that doesn't work, then it's pull straight back and break off 96.3% of the time or get it free 3.7% of the time. If I'm wading and the bow and arrow doesn't work, I'll walk to it, reel down and poke it out with the rod tip. (Carefully...) If it's too deep to get to, then pull straight back. 1 Quote

Tournament as boater I'll drop the rod and fish something else up to the snag and then free it. Fun fishing I always go get it if I'm in a boat, if on shore I try for a few seconds and then break off. Quote

You might want to check out your rules very closely as a lot of tournaments don't consider a hung bait as a line in the water. There are variables as to how long I'll try to get a bait back. If it's a tournament I won't usually mess with it too long, but I'll work on it for 10 minutes or so if the bait is expensive enough or if I was killing them on it and have nothing similar. If it's something cheap like a worm and hook, I'll snap those off pretty quick. With a telescopic lure retriever though it usually gets it off in less time than it took to troll over to where the bait is hung. Quote

I always thought someone just lost their bobber. ; ) Quote

Of course it only works when someone hasn't already grabbed the bobber Quote

When you break off with FC, where do you guys tend to re-tie at? When I break off, I can feel a noticeable difference in the line as I am running my fingers from the original break off point until it get's smooth again. I cut there and re-tie a new lure. Am I being paranoid or is this standard for all? Quote
