livemusic Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Has anyone found a solution to mosquito / gnat / flies control other than stuff you smear/spray on you? Thermacell has this electronic gizmo that supposedly controls them for several cubic feet around it. How great that would be if it worked! Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 Someone here mentioned it the other day in the bug spray thread. I ordered one immediately -- should be here tomorrow -- I'll let you know. Bugs don't bug me much at all -- they mostly steer clear and bites don't persist for more than a couple hours usually. My wife, on the other hand, is a mosquito magnet. No idea why the difference. We can be in the same boat and she's getting annihilated by black flies and they never come near my end of the boat. Hoping this thing works -- not cheap, but Off isn't either...and I don't like a lot of things about the spray. Quote
livemusic Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 My gf is a mosquito magnet. I wonder if it's smellum wimmens use? Quote
96ecss Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I have one. It works great. We even use it when we're sitting in the back yard at night in the summer. Dave 3 Quote
DocNsanE Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Is one of these enough for a 14' john boat? How does the wind affect it? How often do you need to change the cartridge? And the butane? I am very intrigued, mostly because I'd rather not spray my kids with deet. 1 Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 As long as you are not moving and the wind is not blowing, it works OK when you stay in the cloud of repellant. But any movement, and you will loose the "cloud of protection". I have one and used it one time bass fishing at night on my boat. It is a dismal failure for that application. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 Thermacell works for me. Little expensive but its quite convenient 1 Quote
John G Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I have one and I have used it for bank fishing. I strap it to my belt. Don't turn it on and expect it to work immediately. My experience is that the blue pad needs 10 min or so to warm up before it starts working. The blue pad and the bottle of butane lasts for a good while but like anything else, you gotta pay to play. I would not let Wayne P.'s experience deter me from trying the Thermacell out for myself. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 As long as you are not fishing in a breeze and do not mind breathing in the repellant, I guess they work ok. Quote
Mudrider34 Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I have two of them and with the swamps down here in GA you cannot hunt the archery season without one! definitely the best $20 I have ever spent. the butane usually last about 10-12 hours and the mats about 4. it usually takes 15 min or so to start working and if its windy I place it up wind of me and it works great. this is with the hand held smaller version I have not tried the lantern yet. 1 Quote
Dogmatic Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 As mentioned in the spray thread, does this thing produce a cloud that is toxic to insects...and humans? I don't like putting poison on my skin, and I don't like breathing it either. Now, excuse me while I go have a smoke. 2 Quote
nocluefisher Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 Will not hunt the early season without it. Quote

Yes it is toxic to at least mosquitos in that it repels them but I don't know if it kills them. As far as toxic to humans, I would not use it in an enclosed area. 1 Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted May 14, 2015 Super User Posted May 14, 2015 I recently just received some bug spray with Picidirin (early..spelling may be a little off). Supposed to be better for you than deet. Doesn't eat cloths or plastics so this is good. We will see. Quote
livemusic Posted May 14, 2015 Author Posted May 14, 2015 Picaridin, at 20%, was rated by Consumer Reports as the most effective skeeter repellent. I found a product called Sawyer Premium on Amazon that contains that concentration. Supposedly safer, and more effective than DEET. 1 Quote
Shockwave Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I also have a couple Thermacells and swear by them! I refuse to climb into a treestand in September without one! If they could figure out a way to repel ticks as well, they would be the best thing since bacon!! Quote
Fin Stalker Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 I won't night fish without one. Someone posted the butane lasts about 10 -12 hrs and the pads about 4hrs. That's right on with my experience too. I've had mine for a couple of years now and love it. Quote
cdemarse Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Very skeptical about them and bit the bullet and ordered one last hunting season. They absolutely work. I forgot it one time last year while deer hunting and actually turned around to go home and get it. Fire it up and give it a few minutes to work and then fish/hunt in comfort. I have since bought another for camping. Quote
