Toallhisdoom Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Trying to figure out why this is happening. When I fish with my st croix triumph M with pflueger president reel I have no pain. When I fish with my fenwick elite tech bass MH with Pflueger supreme reel I get pain in the fingers that the reel handle is in between, (Middle and ring) The Fenwick does have a split handle. Maybe its just the way the Fenwick holds the reel and it just dose not mesh with my hand? Really like the rod otherwise. But can't fish for more then about half hour without pain. Any ideas for solutions? Maybe some styrofoam around the reel handle? Ugh. Maybe just get a new rod? haha I am thinking st croix avid. Worried it might be because of the split handle tho. Or maybe just the fenwick. No idea. Quote
Bruce424 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 For me the pain comes depending how I grip the reel. If I palm the reel for a really long time. Jig or Texas rig fishing hurts after a while. Fishing cranks or spinnerbaits don't hurt that much cause I grip the handle of the rod mostly. If the rod is really off balance that puts pressure on wrist and fingers. At least for me for long periods of time. Quote
Toallhisdoom Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 Hmm. Maybe I should just get my avid and keep the fenwick for something other then snekos? lol Quote
a1712 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Spinning reel? Trigger Happy Comfort Grips, I won't use a spinning reel without them. Brian. Quote
Toallhisdoom Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 That was exactly what I was thinking about making! I was going to just find a soft rubber hose and make something, but for $6 why not?? haha Thanks! Hopefully this will fix it! Quote
greentrout Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 As an aside, if you make a lot of casts regardless of gear, you can develop trigger finger and/or trigger thumb. Trip to the Doc will help. Old school basser... Quote
papajoe222 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I recently had surgery to correct trigger thumb and carpal tunnel syndrome. If I don't stretch my wrist and forearm occasionally while fishing, the pain will momentarily return. My guess is you recently started feeling the discomfort. You can ignore it, sell the Fenwick, or see a Dr. before it gets worse and you end up needing surgery and missing out on 8-10 weeks of fishing. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 Move your hand foreward one finger. You shouldn't be gripping the rod tightly, just enough pressure to control the rod...loosen up your grip and balance the rod-reel. Tom Quote
Matthew2000 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I had to have trigger them surgery when I was like 7. It sucks, do as much as you can to avoid it. Stretch by placing both hands firmly toghether in a Asian bow type style and go as far down keeping hands and fingers toghether. Helps me quite a bit. Quote
LuckyGia Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I punched a solid barracks door in 1977 with all my might. Of course the Army said it looks fine My hand hurts to even shake someones hand to this day. But I fish until there are tears in my eyes. Usually I can handle the hand pain because my back is sooo bad, that I forget about my hand. The absolute longest I can fish is 4 hours. It has taken 2 years to get to 4 hours of handling the pain. I just keep telling myself " it could be worse ". Had 2 discs removed in my lower back and it is now fused with rods. Have 2 more that need to be fused. Want to trade places ? Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 I'm assuming you are talking about spinning rods? If you are talking spinning rods and reels I'll tell you what is happening, well at least what I believe is happening. The Triumph is a medium power, the Elite Tech is medium heavy and you are using 2 different reels, if your set up are correct you would have a smaller president and a larger supreme being you are using different powers. If that is correct then switch the reels, try the president on the Fenwick and the Supreme on the Croix and see if that changes anything. You don't list the rod lengths and that can be very important in determining the reason but based on the vague info you provided, I'm guessing the medium heavy set up has a larger reel and you are holding it tighter putting pressure between those fingers. If that is the case it may be the reels so switch the reels out and see what happens. I had the same problem with casting rods, everyone loves the Fuji ECS reel seats, I hated them because when I would be throwing spinnerbaits all day or jerkbaits, the trigger on the reel seat is a bit longer and wider and it is only like 1/16" wider than a Forecast reel seat but that little extra in width was the difference between a good pain free day compared with swollen hand and fingers with a lot of pain. One reason I believe the reel may be your problem is the Fenwick Elite Tech spinning reel seats are the most comfortable I ever used hands down, when I got my first elite tech smallmouth spinning rod I couldn't put it down, I prefer casting but for a solid month I was doing nothing but finesse techniques so I could use the rod, it just felt so good to hold. Cgrinder Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Yeah, maybe see a doctor. I had occasional pain while fishing that ended up being the first signs of a couple pinched nerves. Turns out I've lost a lot of muscle strength in my rod arm; no wonder the fish were gettin away! Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 13, 2015 Super User Posted May 13, 2015 You could sell the Fenwick to me. Problem solved. Quote
Toallhisdoom Posted May 14, 2015 Author Posted May 14, 2015 You could sell the Fenwick to me. Problem solved. It is listed in the for sale section. $130 used twice. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 14, 2015 Super User Posted May 14, 2015 It is listed in the for sale section. $130 used twice. I was looking at it but it is a 2 piece and it is MH, my spinning rod powers go from ultra light to medium, after that I go with casting rods, no use for MH spinning. I think the 2 piece is going to make that a tough sell, not a big market as most prefer 1 piece, good luck. Quote
