I've read a few reviews and most seem underwhelming but we will see

You're reading the wrong reviews.

Don't let reviews cloud your judgment, Fishrrw is always touting Phenix and to me , the reel seats on them are cheap, at least Quantum goes with Fuji but we are all different, see what I'm saying? Anyway, it depends on which Tour KVD you're talking about, is it the graphite models or the cranking models and which one of those is it? I like the 7' medium moderate Tour KVD cranking rod but I hate the longer 7'4" and the 7'10" as they are composite rods and they feel strange to me, I like all glass or all graphite, the composites just aren't right for me but you may like it. The graphite Tour KVD rods don't get a lot of love but they aren't bad, I prefer the Smoke rods to be honest, that is a legitimate stick but the Tour KVD has good sensitivity and the spinnerbait stick is the one that is highly regarded by those that do like them. Quantum muddied the waters when they came out with the Team KVD series, those are different blanks and different guides and are made at a cheaper price point but the only way you know if you like them is to fish it and see how it works for you. I'm buying nothing but Fenwick rods now but I have a few Quantum rods and they always were under the radar and it sometimes lead to a really good rod. The Quantum Smoke is a really good rod but I have a 6'6" spinning rod that I got in 2007 I believe, I paid $200 for it, the rod is a Quantum super light, it is a medium power with a fast action and go ahead laugh, a $200 rod from Quantum and what I'm about to say will get some upset but  that spinning rod is really fantastic, it is so much better than my G.Loomis IMX that I gave the IMX to my Grandson, the longer rods in the series were tip heavy but the shorter 6'6" to 6'10" lengths were very sensitive rods. So keep your mind open and give it a chance, you may hate it or you may find you really like them like the way I feel about my Fenwick rods but free is a good deal so you should be happy, I know I would be.

Hey man relax. every one has a differing opinion if you think their reel seats are cheap you can think that.. Every one has there own opinion.....

I picked it out I went with 7'4 heavy and the 7'3 to 1 retrieve. I needed a set up for heavier jigs plus to punch hopefully the sensitivity works well. I can't be dissatisfied because it's free

Congratulations, as far as reviews, there's almost always good & bad ones. I agree with the guys above about having a positive outlook on the rod & reel, if it proves itself one way or the other, it will be your opinion. My opinion is, I think quantum makes a very good rod, as far as reels.. I couldn't say.

Tight lines!

Have a Tour KVD Spinning Rod and I can't exactly say I'm impressed with it.  7' 4" model.  Got it for frogging and just was never able to get it working quite like I wanted to.  Not stiff enough for the long cast hooksets, not sensitive enough for anything with Finese, not hook keeper, mini guides instead of Micro's, can't get a frog out there quite like I can with my Smoke.

On the good side, one of the most comfortable reel seats on any rod I've used.  I like the shorter handle, makes it easier to handle fishing from Canoe/Cayak/shore.  It balances quite well with my Catalyst reel.  The paint job is also rather enjoyable.

I wouldnt listen to anything anyone is saying about the rod be it good or bad, fishing equipment is all about the user. The only person who can decide if its good or bad is you.

I fished the 7'4" quantum KVD spinning model in 2011.. Balance of course was poor, casting was great, feel ( perceived sensitivity ) was very good.

With my son, first cast with a 3" powerbait (chigger craw) 1/8 tungsten, 3/0 Daiichi ( mid 90's era) I feel a thump, felt like a rock, where no rock was known to be , instincts took over and wham! Set the hook on a fat little 5 pound fish.. Lol my son was elated, and a little disgruntled. The old man can still put a hurting on the young gun!

I think it's a fine rod... Balance was odd but it was a well built piece, for the money.

Congrats! I used to enter all of those and never won a thing. Good to know someone actually wins, haha.

Personally, I am not a fan of the Quantum KVD series rods. The Tour KVD reels I don't mind, but I still prefer a Lew's or a Shimano. But, as everyone else state above, you may end up liking the combo! Try it out and find out.

So what would be a good line when I get it for punching

20lb fluorocarbon, that is what most pros use. I don't punch at all, there are some places that I can but it is so sparse and so few areas that there are other spots that will produce fish.  I don't punch and have never really used the technique but from friends that I know that do plus all the videos I saw on punching, I'd say the rod you got is more of a flipping or pitching rod or A-Rig rod and the reason is most punchers like a moderate fast taper, the rod you got has an extra fast taper which happens to be a favorite action for me when it comes to jigs and swim jigs.
