HOIST-N-HAWGS Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 I've been playing with the idea of a wooden topwater frog, why? don't really know myself. But, here's some pic's of the process. Paint and finish coat had to be rushed due to our Florida trip being moved up & wanted the finish to cure before the trip. Keep in mind this is just a prototype. There's a recessed eyelet ontop w/a clip in the hook grove to hlold in place during the cast and while swimming. Once a load is place on the hook it release from the clip. I've also installed a recessed eyelet on the underside for open water applications. The two bends of the side hooks are weedless due to the stomach protruding and works much like a weed gaurd. Again keep in mind it had to be rushed, and I will critique & refine when we return from Florida. Total weight is somewhere between 1/4 and a 1/2oz and body length is 3" w/o the skirt. It was all hand carved. Thought some of you might find this interesting. Quote
zbass Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Very interesting. Curious to see how it works. Great theory. Do you have a ballast weight in the bottom to keep it from rolling over? Quote

zbass Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 What I meant was your gonna have to be able to make them by the thousands if word gets out. Quote
BestNetManAround Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 The way this winters going Paul I am sure you could push out a thousand right instead of Quote
Bass Dude Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 I like the hook coming off the top. Interesting idea---that lure should be able to get over anything. Quote

Just wish I didn't have to rush the paint job, after the amount of time I spent carving sanding, drilling and glueing. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted December 30, 2008 Super User Posted December 30, 2008 Ive played around with something similar. The problem i had was that you would always have to cast into open water, then bring it into the mat. Mine liked to land upside down. Quote
Captain Obvious Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 great job and great idea hope it works but like someone already said you might have a problem with it falling upside down in the nasty stuff. If you could find a way to put a single hook with a weed guard in the back and not a treble that might help. Just a thought have fun and catch one for me Good luck Quote
HOIST-N-HAWGS Posted December 31, 2008 Author Posted December 31, 2008 I have put in place a system where more or less weight can be added or taken away. Starting Friday, I'll have 9 days to test it in the thick stuff while in Florida. Quote
Jeff C. Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Wow, very cool. awsome work. can't wait for the results of your testing on the water. Quote
cootertom Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Guntersville when the grass gets thick!! Hummmm could be interesting. Quote
HOIST-N-HAWGS Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 The upside; I'm happy to say the Brute worked better then expected!!!!!!! It casts a country mile, came through the thick stuff just as good as if not better then the Spro. Occasionally it did land on it's belly during the cast, yet a quick pop of the rod set it upright once again. I did have a few blow ups on it, but no takers. The top-water bite wasn't every productive over all. The downside......... fishing stunk!!!!!!!!! ;D Kinda tough fishing beds and pitching to cruisers w/a semi blind partner. Whom I like to add is a great guy and thankful for his patience, as well as being extremely grateful to him for toting me around all week! As far as testing it's ability to handle hawgs, that will have to wait until I return to Florida, or when the fishing picks up here in the North. Looking positively forward for the frog season to arrive Quote
memo43 Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Paul congrats on the outing. Always feels good when you go out with your own stuff. Glad you made it back to the North, where the rest of us are cold. Didn't want you to get spoiled or anything like that. ;D memo Quote
