Beginner Fisherman Here

Oh okay thanks! That's no problem. Can't wait to leave. Have any tips on how to pick a good spot off the shore? I'm basically just going to look for a spot with Lilly pads, stumps, some type of hard cover, preferably off of a point or in a cove possibly. How's that sound?

You're so lucky!  Diamond Valley has a very nice trophy bass population.  Swimbaits are your best friend, especially in trout colors.  You can throw pretty much anything out there, just make sure it can get deeper, socal lakes are deep when they actually have water in them.  When the water level is low, fish are gonna be a lot harder to catch but they do still eat.  Drop shotting is another good technique but not with that rod and reel combo.  I would stick with spinnerbaits and plastics with that rod.  Creature baits, Craws and big worms should catch fish.  Good luck and just go out!  Screw the reports, they are designed to keep you off the water so the other guys can fish!

if you are going to be fishing around day break, id go with something top water first.  throw a popper, spooks, buzzbaits, spinner baits, and frogs!  then after sun up id switch over to plastics or a crank bait. 

 

certainly the rods you have will work for all presentations... but other rods/reels would make certain presentations better and easier to accomplish.  if your going to throw a jig I would recommend a medium-heavy or heavy action rod with braid or fluoro (or both once you have a boat and can have lots of rods ready at your disposal).

Okay I have a couple frogs, and other top water baits I can tie on first! Thanks for the advice. How about a location? What should I look for in a spot to fish? Lol

Yeah I'm working on getting more rods reel combos. Working on getting a boat first. Went and looked at them yesterday. Really liked the nitro z6. Also liked the tracker 175. It's aluminum I just dint know If I should go aluminum or fiberglass for my first boat. Obviously the fiber glass had more storage, more hp. Was a all around nicer boat. But is a tracker 175. Or even the best 190 enough boat for me? You know.

Well another bad day out fishing.. lol. It's getting pretty irritating to be honest. 5 fishing trips. 5 times no fish, no bites, no hook ups nothing. I threw worms, in 6 different colors, I through swim baits, plenty of colors, I through frogs, rats, big baits, little baits, fast slow. I even through a worm with a d**n bobber. Not a single bite..

First you have to locate the bass. Most of the time they are actually hiding in weeds near the bank. If you don't have weeds you need to look for other oxygen sources such as spillways, fountains, etc. Then you have to throw the right lure. Bass change everyday, one day they may bite on a jig and take a Crankbait the next day. Just keep casting out there where you think they are and change up your retrieve every time. Maybe fast and then slow, or try at a moderate speed. Eventually you will find what they like and get what you deserve. You just have to figure them out and reel them in!

If I know one thing about SoCal bass, it's that they're highly pressured. Your best bet might be to tag along with someone who's catching fish (doesn't matter if it's from a boat or the banks) and won't mind showing you a thing or two.

 

And oh yeah, most folks tend to fish too fast and too shallow. If the fishing is slow, slow down.

any boat will do.  I fish out of my 1972 14' aluminum boat, with 1974 evinrude 9.5 (my main fishing lake is 9.9hp limit). I built a casting deck made a cooler livewell.  I call her a hillbilly bass boat. 

 

never been to socal, but im pretty sure its warm and sunny most of the year. in the summer, when its warm and sunny here for long stretches and the water temp is up.  I feel the fish tend to go deep to get out of the heat, or hide under docks, in the weeds, something to shade them from the summer rays.

"Deep" yeah fish here are very pressured. Water temps are also in the low to mid 60's so spawn mode has kicked in so bite is slow I yhink? Also the lake I was at on the shore it was so shallow I through a crank bait the is supposed to be a 2' diver and it was dragging on the floor about 5-7 yards out. It was also very cloudy, and kind of cold yesterday. Maybe low 70's. Where past few days have been mid 80's.

"Josh" yeah I'm really tempted to buy a used bass boat from crags list. Something cheap. Something I can go and get used to loading unloading myself, something I can learn to tow with, and start learning how to fish better before I drop 20+k on a fiberglass. After a year or so and a lot of fishing sell it buy a boat I want. I just can't see spending 25k on a boat and nit being able to catch a d**n fish lmfao.

What is your price range on the boat? New? Used? I would look into the Stratos 189 VLO.. Great boat, it's a 18' 9" with a 150 Evinrude!

id suggest you check craigslist for a 12-14-16 or so jon or v hull aluminum boat (not even a bass boat) throw on a small outboard and hit the water.  around here you can get a decent, ready to fish, setup for about $1200-1500.  if your going solo fishing, you'd be better off starting this way since you will be unloading by yourself.  You wont feel so bad when the boat hits the docks/ramp walls when going solo. 

 

that's going to get you on the water and better able to access the fish.

Any luck yet? Heading to perris next week; it has been almost a year to the day since i fished there. I used to be there every day last year till about June, never have been skunked there.
