Idk where the best spot to ask for advice for fishing .....if I wanna be able to use a egg sinker and fish from the bottom how can I come about to have my hook float while being on the bottom ? If this is the wrong place for this .I apologize in advance and point me to the right direction. . Thanks

Use elaztech baits. Zman makes their plastics from elaztech. They will float a hook.

Tone, welcome to the forums.

 

If you're using live bait, there are a couple

things you can do.

 

1) I'm assuming you are using live nightcrawlers?

If so, see if you can find a syringe -- you'll use this

to inject air into the nightcrawler.

 

The injected air will cause it to float - have your sinker

anywhere from 6-24" above the hook depending on

how far up you want the worm to float.

 

I've done this (in the past) and it has been dynamite

for bass.

 

2) Same sinker idea above, but you'd look for floating

soft plastics that you can either wacky rig or such.

 

I learned bottom fishing from a elderly Korean man, but

what I use(d) are long poles - either graphite or fiberglass

not poles with reels. Floats used are pencil-style floats, 

but not the typical stuff you see in stores. Like this:

You sit and wait. The float is so sensitive it provides

almost zero resistance to fish taking bait. When bottom

bait is taken by a fish, the pole float will either sink, or

skim along the surface indicating you've caught your prey.

 

Very fun. Haven't done it in a while, but it is so simple and

inexpensive!

They do make cork jigs specifically for the presentation you are trying to accomplish. You can add bait to it, or use hair. It's called the "Lindy Floating Rig". Google Lindy Fishing Tackle.

I'll  let you in on a little trick I learned years ago.  Use a Carolina rig with the big weight and a 3 foot mono leader.  Get a  2 or 3 thin wire Gama EWG hook.  Take a tube bait of your favorite color, and put a little piece of packing Styrofoam inside the tube.  Texas rig the tube with the foam inside and skin hook it.  When sitting still the tube will float high above the weight, and when you pull the weight it will dive down and then float back up when sitting still.  If you just shake the weight and don't pull it, the tube will dance in place.  It can be deadly at times.  Fish it slow and let the floating tube do its thing.  When you feel a bite make a big sweeping hook set to take up all the slack quickly.  You will need a big long rod to get the job done.  Good luck.

I would just use a drop shot if you're using nightcrawlers. Keep it simple. You can easily control the distance to be off the bottom. Many many articles and videos available for rigging a drop shot.

I do this same thing, but I use foam earplugs in the tube. The foam also holds scent really well, so I'll usually douse it in anise scent.

Use the little inline floats they use for walleye spinners. I used to do this all the time with fathead minnows and nightcrawlers right after ice out as it was about the only way I could catch fish that early in the year.

Easy simple and effective, forget the egg sinker.  Depending on water depth you approach it from the other direction, use a bobber.

You can blow up a minnow as well just need a little syringe. Works better on fat head minnows, shinners are more flat and harder to air up. But I'd go with the drop shot or slip float idea.

Yeah google carolina rig.

Thats what you want to use.

Use mono for leader because it floats.

use unsalted plastics. Any brand will do.

Use light gauge hook like owner twistlock light if using a smaller bait and or owner finesse hooks. or use regular owner twistlock hook if a large bulky bait.

I catfish with a carolina rig using an egg sinker ,and a floating jig head made for walleye . I catch shad for bait with a casting net then immediately drop them on ice . I do  not attempt to keep them alive .  . It works exceptionally  except the jig head is only good for a couple of fish .
