Do You Favor Plastics With Attractant / Smell?

I was looking at Berkley Powerbait products and also Megastrike. We need every edge we can get, it seems. Seem to make sense. Do you think it works? Which do you like?

I think it covers up the negative smells.it may inhance the bite but i think i enjoy sniffin them more then the fish who knows.i do know things they eat have a smsmell.since its not costly to have a scent spray why not.i like gulp,powerbait,and manns.sprays i like to use baitmate and yum and i have a tube of fs454 made by manns that smells like it did 25 yrs ago mmmmmm

Yeah, I'm a big Powerbait fan too. I'm not really convinced scented/flavored bait works so much as attractant for bass, but Berkley claims they'll hold onto it a little longer before spitting it out, which seems reasonable (or they'll swallow it, as Jeff H says above). Presumably, the same is true (or is supposed to be true, at least) of salted plastics.

Love the Rage tail coffee baits. I have used attractants on it, and haven't seen it make a difference other than draining my wallet.

I'd just as soon they not add any scent to the plastics, but it doesn't stop me from buying and using a particular brand of bait if they do. I don't worry about it too much 'cause I don't put much stock into it's effect on my bass fishing outcomes.

I don't know if scents work or not, I use very few baits that come impregnated and won't buy aftermarket scents.  If they don't work why spend the money and if they do work the fishing is less challenging.

I rarely use a plastic bait that doesn't have any impregnated scent.  And if I do, I'm probably dipping it in garlic scent.  For me it's a confidence thing.

I use JJ's magic and I believe it helps some days and the fact you can add colors to your baits is great.

Same here. I've never done well with unscented, so I use scented stuff for my own confidence.

Strike King, Powerbaits, & Zoom are my 3 favorite go to plastics! Never used scents or dyes on any of my plastics & they all produce very well! I totally agree with some of the guys : it's all about the angler's confidence!

I favor plastics that catch fish. Some baits are better than others, and some have scents, and some don't.

 I have a tube of Megastrike I bought last year and I have been carrying it with me in my kayak and while bank fishing but to be honest, Iv'e not used it much.  A few times I did use it I was hoping to catch a lot of bass and bigger ones and on those few days I only caught one or two small ones.  Did the Megastrike work?  I don't it.  It seems to me more and more if the bass are going to bite they are going to bite and if not then not and no scent or attractant is going to make them bite.  

 

But, I will say sometimes I think Powerbait does help.  Along with Yum-Dingers I always try to bring some Powerbait worms.

If the bait comes scented, great. Haven't used powerbaits in a while, but they do work. Really like the coffee scent of Strike King baits. If the baits do not have scent, I mostly smear some Megastrike on them. Also use JJ's alot. Something about a little chartreuse on the tail of a swimbait or the claws of a Rage Craw make them magic. Once watched a little guy take my Shimee Stick, which had Megastrike on it, and actually followed him for at least a minute and actually lifted him out of the water without setting the hook. Then he let go. The stuff does work. I don't think scent triggers bites, but could be wrong. I do think bass will hold them longer with scent. Most baits that are scented lose their scent pretty quick with the exception of maybe Powerbait or Gulp but I think their plastic is too stiff. JJ's lasts for a few days and you can smell it across the lake and Megastrike lasts pretty long. Haven't tried too many others. Haven't needed to.

I don't use anything more than what's already on the plastic. Seems the anise scent works great. Sometimes I'll take a lure that's dry and dip it in a bag full of new baits.

 

I have used Powerbait mullet minnows for flounder. They think they're real enough to bite and keep biting them.

I was a Marshal this week on Lake Havasu and just realized while reading this thread that none of the 3 pro's used any scent at any time. Not on any of the hardbaits (frogs, walking baits, crankbaits) & not on the soft baits (craws, trick worms, jigs).

I wish I would have realized this then so I could have asked about it...

I think soft plastic just has the right texture or feel to it that bass don't spit it out often, so I'm not convinced scent makes much a difference there. I catch fish regularly with scented and unscented plastics. I've used Megastrike many a time and couldn't tell you whether it saved the day or not. The hard days are just hard no matter what the bait smells or tastes like.

 

I do subscribe to the idea of it helping the fish hold on to hard baits longer, though - most notably jigs. I apply Megastrike liberally to the entire head of every jig I put in the water. Again, I'm never certain that it makes a difference, but I feel that it does.

Love the coffee scented stuff. Much better when I throw a dip in to have coffee over garlic residue on my fingers. Lmao
