Dogmatic Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Can anyone answer me this, why on ebay, do people run up prices over retail, or even other listings BIN price(as an example: HB Helix up for auction and buyers get in a bidding war until they've driven the price up to nearly $250, when there are Helix listed for BIN $199)? Why when sellers obviously have multiples of items, and keep posting new listings after they sell one, do bidders keep bidding up the price(example: 55 lb thrust trolling motor starting price $80, buyers bid it up over $100, sells, and the seller post another listing immediately, starting price... $80, and the same people, that missed out on the last one, start bidding up the new listing)? There are tens more examples, I just dont get it. I guess the point of my rant is, why don't people, use their heads, just do a little research, I imagine we're shopping for bargains, save themselves and everyone else money and time. JUST THINK! 1 Quote

'Bago-Bassin' Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Ebay is/was and always will be a sellers market for the vast majority of all business conducted there. Sure you might get something cheap if you are the only one interested in the item, or if you catch a listing in a wrong category (always cast a wide net when searching fleabay). Other times you can catch deals if you shop for auctions ending on holidays, Friday night or other times when people are out and away from their computer. But it's a sellers market. Really it is basic human nature that drives the prices. People get into a frenzy over bidding because they have to have *that* item and develop tunnel-vision regarding anything else. I.E. another item exactly the same at a lower price. That is when nutty behavior shows itself. The other reason is that they [we,them, us, whomever] have had it drilled into our collective heads that there is a shortage in this world....of everything: tackle, cars, food, eligible mates, good deals on trolling motors, whatever, virtually any 'commodity'. Of course this is done to make people go into a sort of panic mode and drive up the prices everywhere, not just eBay.. It really isn't the fault of the buying public either. It's been so hammered into the collective conscious of society that it's automatic. The last reason is that people just don't shop for deals when they should. I don't know if they never learned or just don't bother? I know myself personally: I shop for online deals all the time. I research pretty much everything I drop money on that isn't an absolute necessity. I'll price shop, figure in shipping price and time, seller reliability and so forth. In just a few minutes I can usually suss out where I'm going to buy or bid on something. I figure in brick and mortar places too. I'll know where, and how much I'm willing to pay. Now I take that info over to fleabay [for example] and start trawling for a deal. It may take me some time and I may miss out on a few auctions, but I almost always end up with what I want at the price I want, if I'm willing to wait for it! Then again if what I want is a "hen's tooth" then I don't mind paying up for it. But even that has its limitations. Lastly on fleabay: snipe. Yup....snipe. It's the only way to go. Bid once, bid your max and bid as late as possible in the auction. Have the mindset of what is the absolute top limit you are willing to pay for an item (don't go nuclear you could train-wreck with another nuke bidder) ,one penny more and you'll walk away from the auction. Have a mindset that the one penny more the winner paid is too much and he got hosed. Bid that amount as late in the auction as you can stand it (usually ten seconds or less) and let the chips fall where they may. O.k. Imma climb off my soapbox and go look for a deal. 3 Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted May 9, 2015 Super User Posted May 9, 2015 .... Why when sellers obviously have multiples of items, and keep posting new listings after they sell one.... In your example which Helix model? There are at least four, top of the line Helix has side imaging, down imaging, 2d sonar, gps and Navionics maps. That one is 499, and they're out of stock just about everywhere. Law of supply and demand, ppl will pay more to make sure they have one Quote
Super User FishTank Posted May 9, 2015 Super User Posted May 9, 2015 The same thing is done on amazon. They have 5in 10 packs of Senkos listed for $11marked down from $12.xx. Crazy. 1 Quote

Dogmatic Posted May 9, 2015 Author Posted May 9, 2015 Is shipping different on the reels? Sonar units, and yes shipping is the same. Exactly what I described is happening again. Also, retiredbosn, if you are looking for a Helix unit si/gps units are available on eBay for less than $499. Quote

Thanks for the heads up, I was fortunate enough to buy a boat this year, worked one into the deal. Just got an 899 as well. I really like the Si, let's me see what's beyond my boat, really neat technology. As far as auction sites go I don't bother bidding until there is 10 seconds or so left. After being sniped a few times I stated seeing the benefit, pick your max bid and place it, sometimes I win sometimes I don't. Auctions with allot of idiots bidding I don't bother with. FWIW, I've never been successful on electronics, seems like that category is full of idiots. 2 Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted May 10, 2015 Super User Posted May 10, 2015 I buy a lot of tackle on Ebay. One thing I always try to keep in mind when on an Ebay binge is whether or not I would buy said tackle if I saw it in a store at that price. If the answer is no, I know it's time for me to get off the computer for awhile. It's easy (for me) to get caught up in a good deal when you really don't want or need the item to begin with. 2 Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted May 10, 2015 Super User Posted May 10, 2015 The deals are there if your patient and you snipe..I just scored a Scorpion 1500xt and a Scorpion DC both mint in their boxes with papers, from Japan....for $220 shipped. 2 Quote

Super User retiredbosn Posted May 11, 2015 Super User Posted May 11, 2015 Will also add that if you're a competitive person stay away from auction sites and auctions in general. I'll never forget my wife's first auction, she set a price and things were going fine, then she was outbid. Oh man you would have thought the person had insulted her mother! She ranted, cussed and bid like a person possessed. She won the auction but could have purchased two comforter sets for what sure paid! 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted May 11, 2015 Super User Posted May 11, 2015 Winners win. Losing bids is a sign of weakness. Bid high. Bid often. Quote

Dogmatic Posted May 11, 2015 Author Posted May 11, 2015 Where the hell I came up with reels from is beyond me. Doesn't really matter, it happens with everything, sonar,reels,baits...you name it. Like someone posted earlier, people are just dumb. Sometimes I wonder though, could there be collusion, between a seller and a bidder,or just a seller with a separate account bidding items up??? Super User Lund Explorer Posted May 14, 2015 Super User Posted May 14, 2015 For every 1,000 people on Ebay, the vast majority get their merchandise at a reasonable price, a few a completely dissatisfied, and only one gets their merchandise at below wholesale cost. If you are tired being one of the few, I can show you not only how to join the majority, but can also let you in on the secret to becoming the one. Isn't it amazing how many people don't understand the principle of "Fair Market Value"? Quote
