Fish Kill: Alarmed Or Normal?

Hi all,

 

I was at most local lake in Miami, FL and I noticed along the shore there were 3 Large Mouth Bass and 7 Tilapia dead along the shore. I was wondering do you guys find it alarming or am I just witnessing a normal incident?

Many factors can be contributed to fish kill. Here in the northern States we see it a lot during the spring. The O2 levels drop and the fish can not take the change in the drop.

Toxins can also contribute to fish kill. Run off, yard waste, fertilizer, and so on can add deadly levels that fish are unable to handle.

I wouldn't be too alarmed and would chalk it up to an abnormality. So check though with your local DNR site. They should list of that lake contains higher levels that could be harmful.

I wouldn't call 10 fish a fishkill.  It might have been something local and the fish got too close to it.  I have seen entire lakes wiped out to the point where they close the lake to fishing.

Just makes me sad to see a big bass dead like that

Man that does stink (literally).  But you should have propped a lure in it's mouth and taken a few pics.  Then you could have said you knocked 'em dead today, or you killed 'em on a spinnerbait.  O.K. I'm done with the cheesy jokes.

That number of that kind of fish, makes me think somebody decided they didn't want to clean the fish they kept and just dumped them.  That ticks me off more than taking them home and eating them.  Waste lake that is just lazy dumb.!!!

I have seen a massive fish kill right outside Holiday Park entrance in Broward, years ago. It was during the summer and a big storm dumped massive amounts of rain and hale in a short period of time. The water in the canal turned over and thousands of fish were floating everywhere. Not enough O2 in the water to support them. The gators feasted for weeks.

This is a very rare occurrence. It does happen from time to time, when it does it is a real mess. The number of gators we have down here, can clean it up pretty quick. The feast begins!!!!!
