Crankinstein Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I agree with most on here that while a similar rig can work the original zman TRD will work best. The plastic's buoyancy on the shroom head is what gives it a lively action on the bottom. As a side tip though I would urge everyone using the Ned rig to check the hook points on their shroom jig heads closely as I found out yesterday even a minor snag can cause the little point to dull or break very easily. I caught several fish yesterday and then suddenly had 4 fish get off. How I didn't notice it after the first fish or two is a mystery but I took a real close look after that fourth one and noticed my hook point had broken. I snagged a small stick earlier and I guess in my excitement of trying a new rig that actually works I didn't check my hook close enough afterwards. Bottom line is the Ned rig works and catches great numbers. I haven't tried too many of the other adaptations of it as far as trying slightly different baits or jig sizes however I have an idea for one using a Zinkerz worm(that's not cutting it in half) that I may try next time out, if it works I'll let you guys know. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 7, 2015 Global Moderator Posted May 7, 2015 Ah yes, the "It only catches small fish", theory. I'll just leave these here. 3 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 7, 2015 Super User Posted May 7, 2015 I can't use an exposed hook in some of the lakes I fish. Way to much vegetation. On those lakes I usually fish the bait on a t-rig. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted May 7, 2015 Super User Posted May 7, 2015 Well, bluebasser, I may to give the rig another trial. Nice fish! Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted May 7, 2015 Super User Posted May 7, 2015 Well, bluebasser, I may to give the rig another trial. Nice fish! I think the hardest part about using it is walking away from that Goldilocks zone where nearly every cast is a decent dink to head for the zone where it will take way longer to draw a hog. Especially when you haven't landed that hog. I'm right there with you though man... All we can do is fight the good fight until we do! You can't catch fish on it if you don't throw it though, that much I'm sure of. Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted May 7, 2015 Super User Posted May 7, 2015 Btw the best advice I ever got about the Elaztech material was when someone here told me that you have to heat up the hook with a lighter before you rig. It goes in like a dream! Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted May 7, 2015 Author Super User Posted May 7, 2015 Thanks for the help, guys. I'll guess I'll have to find another way to get some. They seem to be hot items right now, haven't seen any on the Flea Market yet. Quote
RangerDanger Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Thanks for the help, guys. I'll guess I'll have to find another way to get some. They seem to be hot items right now, haven't seen any on the Flea Market yet. I wouldn't wait to locate the TRD's if you can get zinkerz get some and go fishing. I can't imagine the TRD works any better. Quote
garvin Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 You could also see if BPS or your local sporting goods stores have the Z-Man Hula StickZ. I just ordered some (along with some 1/6 oz. ShroomZ heads) to rig up Ned style. At 4", they're a slightly bigger presentation than the TRD, but still made from Elaztech, so the floating and durability is still there. Quote
Heron Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Hmmm...this has me thinking now. I wonder how a rattlesnake worm would look on this rig.... I wonder what it would be like, if you scaled it up, using a heavier jig, and something like the tail end of a 7" senko..... I wonder what it may be like using a chunk of the Zoom mag finesse worm.... I wonder if I were to put an egg in the ground, would I grow an eggplant.... Hmmm Quote
