Ned Rig Imitator

I went to Bass Pro on Saturday with the intent of picking up some Ned Rig stuff.......unfortunately I couldn't find any.

Would a jighead with a 3-inch senko do somewhat of a similar job?

I'd let the bass answer. My guess is yes. I've done very well with a jig and senko trailer for years.

The Bass pro by me carries the strike king zero worms which are made by z-man and are made of elaztech. What i like about the elaztech worm stubs is that with use they will become spongy like and have a lot of wiggle action to them on a swim retrieve. If you deadstick them or hop and crawl them the body will float up off the bottom.

As a matter of fact, I do. I usually use Gopher mushroom head jigs but have used a small ball head jig in a pinch. And I still caught bass.

If you don't use Zinkers they are a must try!!!

You will need to glue them on the head with superglue gel

This may sound rediculous but the TRDs really are by far the best things for Ned rigs.  I've done a bunch of different configurations of Zinkerz, etc. and while they catch fish, they never seem to be quite as effective as the legit Ned rig with TRDs/Shroomz heads.

 

 

So yes and no.  You can put something together that will work in a pinch but it won't be quite as effective as The Real Deal.

They're a bait by Z Man created specifically for the Ned Rig.  It's 2.75", significantly softer and more jiggly than a Zinkerz, and they SLAY on the Ned.  I's insane how well they work.  I went out last Thursday and just about emptied the pond I was on.  If I wasn't a catch and release guy I feel like I could have sunk my boat with inks and panfish- and if smallies aren't on beds, LOOK OUT.

You'll still catch fish on your somewhat similar rig, but at some point you'll definitely want to track down and purchase some of the original components to try. BPS now carries their own branded version of the mushroom head jig.

Yea, my local BPS doesn't have them either

I'm going to weigh in on favoring the ZinkerZ (or more specifically the Strike King Zero) over the TRD. The pours on the TRD are crap, the colors run much more evenly and vibrant on the zero. The only important part that Hi Salenity mentioned above is that you need to use elaztech.

I have made some of the ned type rigs. but used heavier jig heads and fished faster. Let me tell you it works. You don't have to go finesse on this. I believe the erratic fall of the bait is the trigger.

The Ned rig is also known as a "dookie rig." Take a look at a ZMan Finesse TRD and you will realize the inside joke of TRD (hint: say it as a word, not as the individual letters).

Also, what makes the TRD so effective and necessary is the buoyancy of the bait. As it sits in the water, the tail end pokes up and the head points down, like a feeding fish or crawdad. Senkos and a lot of other baits sink and don't give the same presentation.

I could not do the ned rig...killed me with an exposed hook and I could not throw it where the fish were going to actually be.

Setteled on a gammy flick shake G-finesse with nose hooked zman hula stick and it worked well for me with cut pieces of rubber band on each side of bait on hook so it stays put. I know its not the ned...but good god that thing was just not for me (TRD +jighead). 

maybe on a mayfly hatch I guess, but I had no confidence on it. I Really have a lot of respect for the guys that can throw it.

They sell mushroomhead jigs with a crappy wire guard at Walmart. I bought a pack of1/4 and 1/16 there. They also had one made by arkie that came with a bait on it already. I used the 1/16 heads and ripped the curly tail off a zman worm and it caught tons of fish.

 I know some folks used to call this the turd rig. The original "Ned" (can't remember his last name, it started with a K) had a sidebar in In-Fisherman several years ago about this rig. At that time I bought some Gopher jigheads and Zeros to try it out. I caught a lot of small fish on it. Bass, crappie, bluegill, walleye and white bass. Nothing of any size, except for a few really nice crappie.

Personally, I haven't caught anything over 2.1/4 pounds on it, but man, it sure is a cure for when you're going a while without a bite. I'm a weekend (and the occasional weekday) angler, and I've only used the Nedster for the last two outings, but we saved an otherwise slow day the first time I tried it where me and my BIL caught a batch of nice 1-2 pounders to round up a day of fishing.
