Sonik Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 What does everyone wear as far as UV blocking pants? I'm looking for recommendations. I wore short sleeves and shorts this weekend and now my legs, arms, hands, face, and neck are a nice shade of scarlet. I just don't want to play games with the sun any more. I've had two family members with skin cancers cut off in the last couple years. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted May 4, 2015 Super User Posted May 4, 2015 I've got a few pair of Columbia pants and a few pair of North Face pants. I like the North Face pants more but they also cost about twice as much. The Columbia pants work fine and are affordable. I don't know the model names off the top of my head. Quote
Mccallister25 Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Not to sound like a smartass. Not my intention, but if you like wearing shorts why not just use sunscreen? I personally hate to wear pants while fishing when it gets warm, let alone hot. Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 I bought a Sims Sun Gator over the winter to help protect my face (also where a wide brim hat) and so far I really like it. I also bought two Hanes Cool DRI sun block long sleeve shirts for $7.00 each over the winter and I've been wearing them while out on my kayak and I like them so far. I just bought a pair of Gander Mountain hiking pants to use too. They are supposed to be SPF rated and are thin. I got all these cloths for when I go kayak fishing. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted May 4, 2015 Super User Posted May 4, 2015 The Columbia PFG (Performance Fishing Gear) Shirts & Pants are decent as is their Blood & Guts Line of gear. A-Jay Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted May 5, 2015 Super User Posted May 5, 2015 Shorts.....Kids SPF 50 in the spray can. Or I wear pants. As for the rest, have 3 buffs, 2 sets of arm sleeves (1 from Simms and 1 from Columbia) to use if I wear a t-shirt. Also have 3 different long sleeve Sungear long sleeve shirts, and the wide brim hat as well as a pair of sungloves. Yes I may stand out fishing all covered up, but that 5 min to put it all on and take it off sure is A LOT better then the 2 days of sunburn and the week of peeling. And of course the protection from possibly getting sun cancer. Quote

I personally hate to wear pants while fishing when it gets warm, let alone hot. That's a legit question, of course. No offense taken. Honestly, I don't like messing with it. I think it stinks, is greasy, a hassle to reapply, and it gets on my clothes. Quote

To me, it's much cooler being covered up where the sun can't beat down on your skin. I think you're on the right track. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted May 5, 2015 Super User Posted May 5, 2015 I use spray on Bull Frog with 50spf when the bugs are out or Banana Boat Water Sport formula , no scent, no grease. As far as pants go I like the Bishop Pants from North Face (discontinued) and 5.11 Tactical Pants (great pocket set up). I also like Kuhl's Liberator pant. These are not for the faint of heart. They cost $95 (got mine for less than half that, long story) but they are the best outdoor gear pants I have ever used. They are warm when I get cold and breath when I am hot. They are also great in rain. They dry out quick. I forgot they are convertible pants as well. If you want to check them out.....http://www.kuhl.com/kuhl/mens/pants/liberator-convertible/ Quote
Sonik Posted May 6, 2015 Author Posted May 6, 2015 Just as an update, I picked up some Columbia Backcast britches and they are amazing light and comfortable. I like the mesh liner for obvious reasons. I'm 6'2" 270lbs and carry a little more junk in the trunk than average. They fit loose and without binding on my oversized rear and thighs and don't pinch up in my crotch. I also picked up a Buff and some sun gloves. I already had some UV shirts from a few years ago I bought after I was charred on a trip to PCB, FL. With a decent hat, I should be ok. Thanks for all the help and advise. I may update after fishing the get-up this weekend. Quote

I have their sling pack and really like the quality. I'm sure their clothing is top notch as well. Quote

Super User Catt Posted May 7, 2015 Super User Posted May 7, 2015 Columbia, Under Armour, or Magellan Know to many people with melanoma who depended on sun screen! Quote
GADawgs Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 The Columbia PFG (Performance Fishing Gear) Shirts & Pants are decent as is their Blood & Guts Line of gear. A-Jay x 2. I wear their pants and long sleeve shirts. The pant legs do have a zipper if it gets too hot (which hasn't been an issue yet) and the sleeves rollup and have a button and strap to make them short sleeves. I always carry sunscreen with me in case I use either option. I also wear a Buff gaiter on my neck and a wide brimmed hat for sun cover from above. Hands, face, neck and feet all still get sunscreen. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 7, 2015 Super User Posted May 7, 2015 Britches? Lol. The SPF rated pants from various companies are cooler than direct sun, though I'm probably 50/50 with wearing shorts. I use Blue Lizard sun block. Quote

kikstand454 Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Sounds like you got the right gear now OP. I'm totally covered head to toe every time I go out. Its over all cooler that way, and sunburns suck. On the sunscreen note, I still carry sunscreen and put it on my face and neck ( even though I wear a buff and a wide hat) . My favorite is nutregena. Its expensive, but it goes on nice and dry and you don't feel it at all. Because I'm only using it generally on my face- the one can will last all summer. Quote
Crutch Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 I'm 23... With that said, I enjoy being out in the sun with no shirt and shorts. With that also said, I always wear spf 50 sunblock. The threat of skin cancer is no joke, and while I'm sure it is not as good as being all covered up, I feel perfectly cool when I have the sunscreen applied. Quote
