hatrix Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 So this might sound weird but do the minus 1's have a special kind of paint or something on them? I ask this because when bank fishing I will toss a few lures in a empty plastics bag and take a little walk. Well for some reason when they are in a bag with plastics and other stuff they turn sticky all over them. Out of the million other baits I have done the same with it only happens to those. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 7, 2015 Global Moderator Posted May 7, 2015 No idea if it's a different paint or not but I've seen the same issues with the original version, not with the Elites though. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 7, 2015 Super User Posted May 7, 2015 I never had it happen and I have a bunch of those but I never put them in a plastic bag either. To me it sounds as if the plastic and the paint had some kind of reaction. Quote
DocNsanE Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 First order I ever made to basspro when I first got into fishing, I order three Minus 1s.... and I don't think I've ever fished them. Do you fish them in really shallow water? Or more over submerged vegetation? Or more like a square bill into laydowns? I need to tie one on this year. Quote
hatrix Posted May 7, 2015 Author Posted May 7, 2015 You fish them anywhere you might want a wake bait or to dive down a foot or so. I use them over grass that is just below the surface. They are great cause you can throw a crank over grass that is just inches below the surface and be able to cover a area. They are awesome in places that get choked out in the summer. Quote
BassinSoldier Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 There has to be something in the paint that reacts with the plastic. I do the same thing sometimes when I'm walking the bank and I've had a 1 minus do that to me too. Quote
rboat Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 I had that happen with some of my very old rattletraps. After sitting in a tackle box for a long time the paint on 2 of them was very sticky. I also noticed it on a storm thunderstick once. It must be a chemical reaction from plastic that off gasses and changes the outer finish of the paint. I still have the baits and have not figured out how to take care of the sticky paint without a repaint. I have considered spraying them with a clear coat, but not sure if that would help. Quote
primetime Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 That is a great question and timing is crazy, I have been cleaning my boxes up and I love wakes this time of year so I was pulling them out of my tangled mess of lures, and all my mann's wakes with red hooks were sticky like you said. I couldn't get it off as I thought it was scent or some time of film, but it is on the 3 I have all in a shad pattern, silver and blue, red hooks....The tiny one's are fine and have different paint, same with a few I have that are much bigger, I think the biggest size they have....I would say mine are 3 years old, barely used as I found them on clearance in a bin and I don't like 2 red hooks, only 1....Just realized how dumb that sounds. Quote
primetime Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 A wake bait is my favorite presentation in the last few years, postspawn until end of fall, you can wake anything, the Manns are great wakes for the money, but I really like the Red Fin style and shape wakes like the Rapala BX minnow and Long a, or a big fat bait like the larger Egg from Bass Pro and the DT Fat 1 in Red for some reason...I get fish to chase it down from 20 feet away with the big Rapala. hatrix Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 There has to be something in the paint that reacts with the plastic. I do the same thing sometimes when I'm walking the bank and I've had a 1 minus do that to me too. I had 2 of them both sizes in a bag with some other stuff. I cleaned it off when i got home and the next day I put one in a bag and it happened again. I have been throwing a couple lures in a old plastics bag when bank fishing for years. As far as I know oly the minus 1's have that happen to them. I think I used WD 40 to get all that crap off. I think.... Alcohol or something similar would probably work also. Quote
greentrout Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Mann's Baby Minus 1 is the best I've ever used for ultra shallow crank baits. Cabela's Grave Digger goes to 2 ft., a little smaller but ain't far behind in fish catching. All my Baby Minus 1's are kept in separate compartment in my tackle. Never a problem. They just catch Bass. Old school basser... Quote
hatrix Posted May 9, 2015 Author Posted May 9, 2015 Yea I can get some insane distance with the bigger minus 1's on a crankbait rod. I would say I can get down below 2' maybe even to 3' depending how fast you reel and stick your tip in the water? Quote
BobP Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Here's a trick. On the small -1's, take the silicone collar for a jig or spinnerbait and slip it over the rear split ring after you put #6 trebles on the bait. That way, the hooks won't tangle with the larger hooks. Quote
hatrix Posted May 10, 2015 Author Posted May 10, 2015 I was actually just looking through some cranks and here you go It is just hanging stuck to my finger its so sticky and even has grass stuck to it. I also think it might of peeled some paint off I had to really scrub hard to get it off. Quote
