Spinner Bait Questions.

What kind of trailers do you use on spinner baits or do you use trailers at all? Also when I fish soft plastics I like to fish a lot of dark greens, blues and blacks. I have had success on those colors and I have shied away from anything with bright blue, white, orange, and chartreuse colors. It seems to me that a lot of crank baits and the majority of spinner baits are those brighter colors. I have told myself that those colors don't work well in the lakes I fish here in central Florida. Is that true? OR do I just need to start trying some more brightly colored baits?

White or white/chartruese are the only two colors I throw clear or muddy water.

For trailers I occasionally I throw a single tail grub on or a paddle tail swimbait in white or chartruse.

Ive never been huge on using a trailer for my spinner baits, but a lot of guys use soft plastic swimbaits. Keitechs are a popular one, some guys use flukes, and many use various brands and colors of regular paddle tail swimbaits. Usually in the 3-4.5 inch range. I suppose if you wanted to keep your spinner on the lighter side some sort of senko would work as well. I would stick to any plastic that is long and slender (ie. swimbaits, senkos, etc). As far as colors go, I would say use what youre comfortable with. I personally prefer greens as well, but I will occasionally use white plastics as well as plastics with a touch of chartreuse. I think if the conditions are right the bass will bite on just about any color.

I don't always use trailers, but it is usually a twin tailed grub when I do. I can understand your hesitance to use bright and garish colors, but that is just how it goes with a spinnerbait. They are bold, flashy, and designed to stand out. Some of the orange, chartreuse, and firetiger colors might be better saved for dirty/stained water (or not), but white is actually a good choice in lots of situations- including clear water. Think of it as a "shad" imitation.

I'll throw a white or chartreuse if they're interested in eating shad, but boy bass are munching on bluegill, I swear by a Terminator Sunfish pattern (gold/green/purple w/ gold blades). They hammer that sucker. So to answer your question ---- I only add trailers if they are slapping the bait funny. I throw white or chartreuse if they want shad. I throw sunfish color if they feed on bluegill. I throw firetiger in staind or muddy water.
