livetofish28 Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 OK well this past weekend during a tournament my motor completely blew up with no hope of repairing it so now we are looking at our options. Our dealer recommended the Evinrude 150 HO but I have heard a lot of bad stories about Evinrudes. I loved our Yamaha but the 150 who isn't exactly the cheapest. I know a lot of people like their Mercury's but I have never owned one. I'm not looking to start any fights or anything just looking for info on some of the different brands. What are your opinions? good? bad? personal experiences? Thanks in advance Tight lines Andrew Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted April 30, 2015 Super User Posted April 30, 2015 Personally I'd lean towards merc or evinrude. After 2006 evinrude are beasts. Don't think merc has bad years. As will all motors maintenance is key, keep that in mind if you buy used. 2 Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted April 30, 2015 Super User Posted April 30, 2015 Are you wanting a two or four stroke? Quote
livetofish28 Posted April 30, 2015 Author Posted April 30, 2015 Are you wanting a two or four stroke? Probably two as that is what we have had I know the Sho is a four but it is also the most expensive I was thinking the Pro xs, HO or the Sho more than likely the first two due to price Quote
Logan S Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 When my motor blew up I re-powered with an Evinrude ETEC 200. I'm happy with it and would recommend the ETEC line to anyone, very powerful and also fuel efficient. Of the choices you mentioned, I really don't think you can wrong...Find the best deal and roll with it (consider warranty too!). FWIW, I've seen every brand run perfectly and I've also seen every brand have issues, like it was said above maintenance is huge...The better you take care of it, the better it will take care of you. Super User slonezp Posted April 30, 2015 Super User Posted April 30, 2015 If you switch brands your going to have additional costs of replacing controls 2 Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted May 1, 2015 Super User Posted May 1, 2015 All of them are good what matters most is how close a dealer is when and if u need a small part asap to get you on water.i dont have any now but i owned mercs, yamas, force, rudes it boils down to a few things ease of maintenance, fuel economy, and IMO low end performance.its fun goin 50+ mph but its more fun goin 20 mph then you dont miss the important things in life. livetofish28 Posted May 1, 2015 Author Posted May 1, 2015 If you switch brands your going to have additional costs of replacing controls When i bought the boat It had a blown motor and it had evinrude controls with it so I have the stuff hotfoot oil tank etc Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted May 1, 2015 Super User Posted May 1, 2015 My ownership experience is limited to Mercury and Evinrude. I have no complaints about either, ppl keep telling me that my current Optimax is bullet proof. The last guy to tell me that had a brand new rude hanging off the back of his Ranger. If I had to repower tomorrow, I would have either a Evinrude or Mercury probably a Merc just because I wouldn't want to replace the controls. I will say this about the Optimax, mine is a 225 (the 3.0 liter) with a Tempest ss prop, the fuel efficiency is simply astounding. Much better than I anticipated then again I'm not a speed freak, I cruise at about 4000 rpms, speed is about 46mph (gps speed) at that rpm I'm burning right at 9gph which gives me a cruise range of roughly 250 miles (huge tank 56 gallon) FWIW these numbers are much better than my first boat that had a Johnson 140 carb motor, only had a 30 gallon tank had about 2 hours worth of gas. I can't tell u how many times I ran out, the gauge didn't work, lol. Quote
livetofish28 Posted May 1, 2015 Author Posted May 1, 2015 I have a Merc and Evinude dealer that is an excellent shop right at the marina I launch at so ease of parts and maintenance is really close. The yamaha dealer is not very good from all the stories I have heard. Quote
Robeng Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Truly Mercury or Evinrude. Mercury is my choice. Mines 40hp 2 stroke 4 cylinder oil inject and is 24 years old. Solid maintenance and garage kept in Michigan. I sometimes wish mercury or Evinrude built cars!! Hope that helps. Quote
Al Wolbach Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 If you switch brands your going to have additional costs of replacing controls Good advice, I suggest you purchase based on the controls you have currently. About $1k to switch last I checked and all brands are good these days with good maintenance. Do you have spare props and other brand specific parts?........Al Quote
