I am new to using a spinning rod. My Berkley Shock 7' rod has what I see is called a poodle-tail end. The part below the reel is too long for my liking, it sometimes snags on my shirt. Is this normal, lol? I might need to find something with a shorter end section. Why so long?

I've never heard it called that- but it isn't really any longer than a full cork grip for the same sized rod.

A poodle tail? What is that? Anyway, you might consider a custom for you special requirements. They're not as expensive as you think, and you get more for your money.

I note that St. Croix spinning rods have various length end handles.

The poodle tail designation has to do with modern rods having that skinny section and then the bulb end, like a poodle dog's manicured tail.

Ok, but I thought you had a Beekley Rod? I'm lost. The poodle thing has me confused.

Anyway, I find certain butt cap materials catch my shirt more than others. EVA is one of those.

Saw it off, ream out the hair ball ( poodle ) bulb end and reglue... Seriously, those rods are pretty inexpensive, right?

I had to go look at my rod, lol, the image of the Berkley Shock online did not show a split grip. Forget poodle tail, call it split grip, lol. I been out of fishing for quite awhile, lol. Anyway, my rod does have the split grip and I'm guessing it is 10" from the butt end of the rod to the shaft of the reel that hangs down.

I mentioned St. Croix; apparently people do have preferences on this because they do offer different length handles. I can see why you would need long for generating leverage throwing a bait a very long way. I can throw my frog a LONG way with my 7.5' Cashion MH and Lew's TP reel by using a two-hand cast. Other than that, a long handle kinda gets in the way.

I just want to know where you heard a split grip called a poodle tail? Seriously, that is the first time I ever heard it called that.

Can't forget it now! I can edit your profile to reflect all that is THE POODLE TAIL!

Ok, I'm done teasing.

You could try cutting down and putting a rubber cap on the end.

^ this. I'm probably going to do that to some inexpensive rods this summer and try it out in my kayak.

I have no idea where I got 'poodle tail' but I thought everybody would know what I am talking about, lol. Before my fishing hiatus, when I was bigtime into fishing decades ago, the internet didn't exist. Now, in less than a month, I have a bazillion code words to google and learn about. People use a ton of acronyms and jargon about any subject these days. What the heck, poodle tail is sexier than split grip. If I were making rods, that's what I would call it, lol. Marketing 101.

To the OP:

I just go to the BPS site and make sure that anything I order is an "A" handle.  It's just the shortest grip.  Some are pistol grips and some (most) are just short split grips or short straight grips.

Regards,

Josh

You can't just order any rod with an "A" handle - there's usually only a couple rods with the short handle. If you want something not on the list, then custom is the way to go.

"Poodle Tail" grip aside, how do you like the 7' Berkley Lightning/Shock spinning rod.  What action/power is it? Does is throw light baits good?  I always thought the Lightning rod series was a good rod for the price.  I think you can get the Shock rod at Wally World for about $40.  Which again would make it ok to modify the handle without risking damage to a high $ rod.
