Super User Catch and Grease Posted April 29, 2015 Super User Posted April 29, 2015 Ever since I broke a ML St.Croix awhile ago I am so worried about all my rods... If I bump any of my rods on something in the slightest my OCD kicks in and I have to do a full body inspection to make sure I haven't structurally weakened it haha I guess its because I don't have the money to replace them so if one breaks I'm outta luck. Like my flipping rod, that thing is my plan A, B, and C for an upcoming tournament so I have been babying it like its my destiny to keep that rod in good condition... 3 Quote
ChrisWi Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 My dad gets all upset at me when I bring up breaking rods. He got hungup with his new st Croix and started high sticking and I just cringed. I'm always afraid my rods. are gonna break. 1 Quote
corn-on-the-rob Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Fishing with my college club I have been paired with a couple guys who don't pull straight back when trying to break off. They would just basically break off by bending the rod and oh my did it make me cringe. I was waiting for the bone crack. Meanwhile I get snagged frequently but get it out 95% of the time. Carefully whip it back over branches, reeling down and stabbing lures off (carefully of course), bow and arrow things free even with braid etc, etc. They thought I was a wizard. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Handle rods with care of course, but the biggest thing is use proper technique and avoid high sticking etc. 1 Quote
FlipSide Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I cant stand seeing anyone flinging their rod around like a banshee trying to get a snag out, drives me nuts. Just pull straight back and if your meant to get that lure back then so be it... If not oh well, lures are a lot cheaper than rods generally speaking. 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted April 29, 2015 Super User Posted April 29, 2015 I've never understood why people just break baits off. 25% of the time you can bow & arrow it off, 50% of the time you can go past it and pull it backwards, and the rest of the time you can use a lure retriever to free them. I usually only lose about 1-2% of the baits I get hung up. 1 Quote

jcoffman55 Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I broke my all time favorite rod tip off last weekend. I'm still in mourning. Had that thing for like ten years was my BFF, we caught hundreds if not thousands of fish together. RIP......... FYI power window in my truck...... Quote

It works with braid to an extent, but not as well. Bank fishing Bank fishing is understandable, but I see a lot of people doing it out of a boat too. I can see if you're on a school of fish and you don't want to mess that up, but I see so many people break off and then just continue on while they retie, just kind of baffles my mind. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted April 29, 2015 Super User Posted April 29, 2015 I've had this issue and I never broke a rod yet.....*KNOCK ON WOOD* I baby my rods more than my children. 2 Quote
*Hank Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I just broke my powell max 705 Crankbait rod last week and after that I've earned a new respect for all my rods. Especially because now I'm going to have to buy a $150.00+ Rod. Quote

Yeah bank fishing is what I was referring to... If you get hung out on a boat 90% of the time you should be able to get the lure back. 1 Quote

One time on a vacation my mom and dad had rented a van with power doors wich lead to the breaking of my Abu Garcia villain (the only rod I brang on that trip) not a good thing to have happen during a fishing vacation. Matthew2000 Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Just reel as close to the bait as possible. Hope to get it up to youre top guide and pull hasn't failed me yet. Quote
*Hank Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I think investing in a lure retriever would be the best way to go. 1 Quote
Big C Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I take extreme care of my rods. They are stored in my room hung on a rod holder, with slack in the line so they don't stay bowed. My brother always makes fun of me, when we go fishing I stick them in my kayak and carefully strap them down for the car ride. He literally throws his in the back of the pick-up and keeps it on the front porch all the time, or he just leaves it outside in the dirt. Last year we got three inches of ice and his rod/reel was out in the ice storm for two or three days, and it was fine if my stuff was out there it would have been totaled. 1 Quote
masterbass Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I'm also pretty careful with my rods. I took a few combos on a camping trip and when the guys saw the rod socks and reel covers they laughed their butts off. Little did they know how much one of the combos ran me. Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted April 30, 2015 Super User Posted April 30, 2015 What I hate is when spinning reel people store their rods bent over double. AHHHH.........drives me mad. Quote
