I wasn't sure where to post this topic but its something every fisherman/fisherwoman should have.

I'm looking for a knife just for the outdoors, something with a sharp blade, all purpose knife. I would really prefer one that can be on your belt with a sheath.

Can anyone recommend any knifes for around $30-$40?

Buy an Opinel.  Not only are they silly sharp, they're about as no-nonsense cheap as you can get.  The perfect #8 pocket jobbers are like $12.  I like the lightweight shaped wood handles and although the blades are prone to corrosion, they are perfect if you know your way around a whetstone.  I always bring it fishing.  Best old man cheese knife ever too- just make sure you get the carbon blade, as it is the sharpest of the sharp.

Look into these knives.

I second the mora . A stainless steel clipper will cost about twelve dollars .  The sheath although cheap can be clipped in a pocket, waist band ,belt ... They are great cutting knives . Plus a fixed blade on a dangling sheath is mighty handy when one hand is busy messing with a lure caught in a tree limb . LOL

tough one. I have many knives. Mostly folders/flippers/autos, always keep one one me, and in my truck....

I prefer a folder myself. Couple years ago, I got a spyderco "salt". It is rustproof, flick open one handed, nice textured composite handle, and a pocket clip. Under $30.

Small enough to clip in your pocket, and not bulky, hardly know it's there. A great knife to take to the lake or the ocean.

i just lost my gerber river knife a few weeks ago due to a foolish move on my part.... i'll be replacing it soon.  awesome nice to have on the water.  i think they run about $35-$40.  not for everyone, but it worked very well for what i needed it for.  i usually have a small pocket knife in my life vest and ALWAYS have one clipped on my front pocket so i'm usually covered.

Kershaw scrambler.  my everyday carry as well as used to field dress, etc.  it is folding, but is about perfect imo. if you want one on a sheath, still should look at the Kershaw's.

I never head to the water without my Ka-bar. A little more than your desired price range but theyre beautiful knives, especially with the classic leather sheath, and theyre a part of history.

Ditto on the Spyderco Salt.

I have a gerber prodigy. great knife for around 35 dollars.  it is sharp right out of the package. the sheath is great and has many different ways of rigging it.
