Was targeting bass like always but there is this one spot that the last two times out i spooked something pretty big, never got a look at it though to see what it was.  Today i was determined to catch whatever it was and i did.....my biggest bowfin to date.  Unfortunately i couldn't measure him because i put him back in the water with my fish grips attached and he decided he had enough and he got off.  I am pretty confident he was Virginia trophy size at 30" though....wish i had a chance to take better pics.

I caught him on a zoom fluke stick in a bunch of lilly pads.  he pulled pretty good but not as good as they do in the summer.  I was kind of surprised i go him in once i saw him since he was hooked on the outside of his mouth and i was using my spinning set up, 6'9" MXF spooled with 20lb braid.  i am kind of bummed i didn't get a good measurement on him but either way, it was still a lot of fun.

Are they edible?

Yup, plenty of people eat them, in Louisiana a lot of people consider their caviar a delicacy!

That's a good bowfin!

Haha, I remember one time last year I was about to leave the lake after loading the boat up when the guy loading his boat next to me asked If I caught any and after I answered I asked him same question, he said "yeah I caught some good ones!" So he opens his live well to show me and there are like 4 or 5 big mudfish that were like 5lbs a piece... So I guess some people love eating them!

I have read that they are good but only when the water is colder because i the summer time the meat is a little softer.  I am not gonna try it because for one it is a pain for me to keep fish and two i think they are awesome fish and i can't bring myself to kill  fish that has been around since the time of the dinosaurs.

Nice catch on the bowfin.

I have landed a few of them over the years and as I recall they can put forth a formidable battle. Like pickerel, not the prime target, but they do take the kinks out of the line.
